I sold my tula sniper in hopes of putting a good bid on a port K98 via valley guns but the price seems to be getting up there considering I have seen two sell in $1200 range with bayo & sling. Is the one at auction an especially nice one or is it just a case of "got to have it" syndrome? On a side note, the auction got me thinking about the rest of my espigardas portugesas (or as I call them "as velhotas") & my krop rifle shoots awfully high for the loads I shoot out of it. The front sight looks like a replacement, anybody got a measurement of their front sight? Also wondering what you would use to load 6.5x58. Any help would be appreciated.

Just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth ...
There's some beauty pagent bidding going on for this old girl, but it is a beautiful rifle.
Earlier "G" series serial number (a lot of those went to the front), but this one obviously didn't.
No sling or matching bayonet, which often came with them.
I already have an 1941 Portuguese "H" block http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=1090series in nice condition with matching bayonet and sling, or I'd bid on it myself.
With their rarity nowadays, I think an earlier "G" serial number in this condition even missing items mentioned above, could fetch up to $2,000 depending upon how many serious K98k collectors are out there with cash looking to fill holes in their collection.

I'll come clean, it is my rifle up for auction. I won't comment too much at this point for obvious reasons. But I will say that the reserve was met, and there are a few people out there who feel differently and have stated so by bidding higher than others. After the reserve is met, the price the rifle fetches on auction is not relevant to me, as I have no control on the final cost.
Those who took the time to email me hopefully saw that the rifle is exactly as described, and that I provided each potential buyer with over 20 detailed pictures. I don't set the price, past the reserve. But we all know that.
If it was my choice, I would keep this rifle, by far the most beautiful I have ever owned. But other circumstances take priority in life.
Don't worry Jean, some of the money may be destined for your business eventually, who knows?
Revisit this thread in a year or two, and let's ask then whether this was an investment that only incereases in value annually (as most milsurps do), or as JP stated "The worst case of Auction Fever I have seen in a long time".

joe n, I am not knocking the rifle, I am trying to figure out why someone would want it so bad. Is it the whole g block thing? Condition? What i don't want to do is spend what to me is a whole wad of cash on a gun that is artificially inflated.
Skirsons, ever wonder what a misurp would shoot like when it was first issued? Before war, refurbs, use, abuse etc took its toll? Besides, my uncle served in angola & trained on these things, I want to take him shooting.

Glad for you Joe N., sometimes you get lucky in life! As for the buyer, if you really want something once in a while you have to bite the bullet (been there done that myself).

Hi guys, I never thought you were knocking the rifle, I hope I did not give that impression. Just wanted to make sure I came "out" and made sure people knew I stood behind this condition and quality. And the questions you are asking are 1000% appropriate, I have done the same on this same forum countless times. Is the rifle worth the price? It's an auction, up for each prospective bidder to decide. I will say that this is alot of money, and I have learned that the milsurp game is often a rich man's hobby. And I am not rich...poorer by the day actually

Yeah, this milsurp game is odd. The gentleman who bought my sniper paid a heafty price for wanting a tula. Now whoever ends up with that mauser is going to pay a premium for that rifle. Funny how much desire can affect a price point.
