I brought my 10/22 to the range this weekend after installing some parts. One thing I installed was the volquartsen extractor. After firing this weekend I noticed that it extracts ok when I fire it, but if I have a round in the chamber and I rack the bolt the round in the chamber will not extract. I also installed the little spring that came with the extractor I wonder if maybe it had something to do with it. any ideas?

thanks,

What kind of barrel do you have?

If you have a match barrel, VQ/Green mountain etc...then the unfired rounds may not extract....Green mountain barrels have this tidbit of info stamped on the side...

this is true, at first i thought i fuct up my gun then found out it was only the unfired round that it wouldnt grab.

In fact fired rounds are not removed by the extractor, it is only there to extract unfired rounds and direct fired cases and help guide feeding. Blowback actually removes fired rounds from the gun, just remove the extractor and try it out. That said if you have a stock barrel with the loose chamber it should easily extract unfired rounds. If not try the stock spring and if that doesn't help you will probably have to do a little fitting to get it to hook the way it should. I have very tight custom chambers on my 10/22's and I can't get any extractor to work no matter what I try.

I have never been able to figure that out! I do know that it can help sometimes as I had a VQ extractor with a Butler Creek loose chamber barrel and it wouldn't extract a round even though if you had a round chambered, left the bolt open and gently bumped the gun on the ground the round would fall out. I guessed that the stiffer extractor spring was pushing the round slightly sideways in the loose chamber causing it to bind. Someone on RFC suggested putting the stock spring back in and it fixed the problem right away.

Another thought also. Did you remove the barrel? If so, did you have it aligned so the extractor is free on both sides of the relief cut when you replaced it? That can cause some problems with the extractor also.
