Well, as the age creeps up and the eyes start to go, my father had mentioed to me, lol! maybe you should bring me that old 303 back with the scope on it. I laughed and said why, he said well teh 30-30 as nice as i like it may not be the gun for me anymore, I looked at him and laughed at him and said you mean the 30-30 that i gave you that you shot 2 bear, and 3 deer with last fall. You had to be there to whitness the father son moment as we were fishing specled trout. SO!
I am buyiong him a new rifle, I have to think recoil, I have to think thick brush, I have to think those lone 50 foot shots he makes LOL!

So what do you think? It cant be pretty or fancy because at the end of the season it wont be pretty anymore lol! he does not care much to baby a rifle, and old school about guns, as long as they shoot, there is not reason to fuss with it.

Thinking a 6.5x55 or 260? but in a used gun, I have a few months to look around, I bought a sako 61 for him mint, he would not use, was too pretty and I bought a light wight 300 wsm for him, but it is a thumper for him.

Nothiung like a father son relation ship lol!

get him a lever action 44-40, or 45-70 (to be used with trapdoor-level loads). Traditional, reliable, low recoil, perfectly sufficient for <100 yard shots

Sounds to me like your dad did real well with the lever action 30-30. Why not just put a scope on it for him. Or if you feel inclined to treat him to something new, maybe get him a Marlin .444, considerably more gun than the 30-30 but still tolerable recoil. And put a nice 1.5-5 or 4.5 power scope on it.

Just mount a red dot scope on the 30-30 if he still likes the lever action, thier small, light and easy to aim fast with both eyes open for brush shooting with no magnification to get used too for close up shots. He can make the dot as big and bright as he wants or needs too.

Lever action wise I'd look into model 336 MXLR in 308 Marlin express or if you wanna get him a bolt action the Tikka T3 in 338 Federal would be a good bush rifle

Ya I would but that pre 64 winny would just not look right with a scope on it !

Maybe a 44-40 or a 444, I like teh 45-70 idea, never even came to mind he is a lever guy.

Lead bullets and a light load may be the ticket! with a nice 1.5x4 Vx on it may just be what I am looking for!!!!

After all these years this may be his last rifle. Get him something with class like this CZ in 6.5x55 or .308. Nice sling and a lower powered scope and make him use it. To hell with the dings and dents they only add character anyway.

an XLR 45/70 would be good choice with a low power scope. Handload a 400 gr bullet to 1500 fps and let him go kill some stuff. Inside 125 yards it should be great, with low recoil

If his problem is with the sights, and the 30-30 is a model 94 Winchester, he may like one of the newer angle eject versions, that will take a low mounted scope.
The other option is to mount a peep sight on his existing rifle. The aperture improves your sight considerably. But best if he try it first, his eye sight may be beyond what it can do.

Show your dad this, .444 Marlin with B&L scope, 265gr. Hornaday Interlocks, one bang flop shot. Just in his hunting range too.
If recoil is an issue, choose the .444 over the 45-70 IMHO.

I like the 45/70 idea but recoil might become a factor over the next few years.

What kind of game does he "usually" hunt? I know you mentioned bear but is it mainly deer?
