Fitting 1911 Barrel/Bushing

I have a new (used) Colt 1911 and just for fun I bought a Fusion barrel/bushing combo.
The locking lugs fit but are tight and the bushing needs to be ground a bit to slide into place.
Can I just use a file and lightly shave some steel bit by bit until it fits?

What's the sandpaper cloth that polishes steel?

One more question. Does the link pin come out from either side or is there a taper?

Crocus cloth is another very fine polisher. If the lower lugs are tight , that is a good thing at least as far as accuracy is concerned. If your talking about the upper lugs, they are best left alone. A tight bushing fit into the slide is also a good thing for accuracy. Again leave it tight and buy a bushing wrench to remove and install. Removing metal to get a finger tight fit to the slide is convenient but a loose bushing/slide fit is not the best for accuracy. The link pin is not tapered, removal from either side is ok

However a tight bushing can crack as it heats up (remember that both the bushing and the slide will expand as does the barrel!.. and when it is hot don't even think about trying to remove it...

Too bad it's about fitting the barrel and doesn't talk to much about the bushing... Interesting site and way to many run-on sentences...
