Well I am thinking about getting a Nightforce 5.5-22X50 for my 700P. I was doing some research and found that they are not first focal. I was wondering if this feature is worth having? I plan on using the gun at the range, hopefully to 1000yrds, and probably use it for deer hunting too. Also what reticle would you guys recomend? I was thinking about the MLR. Also, are the Nightforce rings and bases worth the $ or should I stick with badger? Thanks alote.h

NF is releasing first focal plane scopes soon. Initially only in 3.5-15x50 and in limited reticle choices.
Whether you would need it or not, I couldn't say. I don't think NF scopes make particularly good hunting scopes. They are big, heavy and have very fine reticles. They are optimized as target scopes.

The NXS5.5-2X50 or 56mm scopes are certainly fine target scopes, but the power, even on 5.5 may be too high for some hunting situations. The only benefit of first focal plane is ranging capability with all powers. Hunters usually opt for the 2.5-10 or maybe a 3.5-15X50/56 in your case would suffice.

Peter

Nightforce

I have the nightforce 3.5x15x50 on a Rem 700 Sendero but Im wondering if it would be ok on a Tikka Tactical that Im buying. I would like to use it on shots at big bucks from a blind. What would ben appropriate scope for the Sendero?

I think alot depends on where you hunt and the type of hunting you do.
For tight bush hunting the NF compacts would be ideal. I have set up several DG rifles with the 1 to 4s for guys using them in Africa, I don't see why they would not work great here for bush hunting.
I use both 5.5x22x56s and 8x32x56s on my hunting rifles, I hunt the open plains and the African savannah where setting up over a water hole or a known for use game trail is and wait. To be able to clearly identify a chosen animal at the distances I hunt at, the big magnification is a great help. The weight of the NF scopes may deter some who walk alot, I don't , my light hunting rifle is 14 lbs and my long range rifle is 20lbs.
the optical quality , repeatability and illuminated reticles make NF a great choice for a hunting rifle scope, you just need to select what is appropriate for your needs.
