I just bought a maverick 88 today that was the shelf model not fresh from a box but it has not been shot either. Basically the one that customers could touch and feel. Anyway I was using the snap caps practicing loading etc and I could only get two shells in the tube. I removed the barrel and had a look and inside the shell tube was about an 8 inch piece of dowel with two rubber washers on it. I am new to guns but what the heck is that for?? I should add after I removed it and put everything back together I could load it full with snap caps and the shotgun functions just fine. So any thoughts???

There are hunting regs in certain provinces and for certain game which require you to limit the ammo capacity of your shotgun. The only thing I can think of is your shotgun was a store return. It may never have been hunted, but it would appear that somebody was going to take it hunting and then returned it to the store for some reason, but forgot to remove the mag block.

Like CanFire states. It sounds like a magazine plug. It's there to limit how many shells can be put into the mag. (It's there to comply with hunting regulations if required).

If your hunting regulations don't require you to plug the mag or you are not using it for hunting. Leave it out.

Mine has been sitting in a cup of pens and pencils on top of the fridge and has been for a long time. I don't hunt grouse with the 12 anyways, especially with the short barrel on it. It's for fun and bear protection. The NEF pardner 20G is way handier and lighter for birds.

I think every shotgun comes with a mag pin. Canada wide you can only have a 2 shot mag while bird hunting, and most provinces only allow 2 for any shotgun hunting. take it out for the range.

Actually its a survival aid: It can be carved out to make either a duck call or an emergency whistle.:D The other feature is that it can act as a butt plug, as to not be so badly raped for asking such a question on this site!:p

I'm as guilty as many others, but it has been pretty bad for that lately. I've decided to be nicer and more patient in the future. I was one of the first to see the original question, I was going to call it an emergency field dildo, but decided as part of being nice, not to.

Just a razz, nothing personal... Its just that some questions although legit may deserve 5 more minutes of research before posting "What comes out of this hole at the end?" kinda questions. Not trying to be mean, but do to lack of sensitivity training at my workplace, I really don't care. Just a little thought before posting a question can keep a lot of egg off your face.

My 2 cents

I'm on this car site forum also where there's a specific area for "newbies" and it's a "Non-Flaming" area...anyone caught razzing a newbie gets turfed! BUT....newbies have to prove their competent enough (after a certain number of posts) to become a "member" and can then move on to more technical discussions...that format doesn't exist here but maybe it should?

In any event, there's a fine line between sarcasm and fun and the reason they did that on the other site was because newbies with "unresearched" questions never came back. Then the site was full of the old "same old same old" guys beating the living verbal daylights out of each other!

I think there's 2 lessons to be learned by this:

1. Newbies (or even oldies)...DO YOUR RESEARCH
2. Oldies...keep flaming to a minimum and maybe politely encourage to use the FAQ sections and read through threads for the answers they are looking for...

Just my 2 cents

Mitch
PS...I read through 58 pages of post topics to find out something about the age of this old Baikal O/U last night on SGW before I posted a question...so it's not that hard to do...!!!

"...hunting regs in certain provinces..." All Provinces for ducks and geese. The Migratory Bird Act is Federal. Some Provinces, Ontario for one, say plugged for all hunting.

I dont feel the least bit bad for asking a question to something I did not know. Yes maybe further research would have been prudent but stupid me for thinking someone might want to give me a quick answer. Even if you dont want to admit it there was a time when everyone on here's knowledge on firearms etc was ZERO and I am sure you all asked questions that others laughed at but, there was still someone that helped you out and kept you going and learning more so you didnt walk away and give up. Ever think this could be part of the problem with the sport not growing or standing together as one??? I think it does. I have been on alot of forums for cars and other things and this forum by far has the MOST egotistical smart ass's that seem to delight in slamming newbies like me rather then helping or just Shutting the F### up. I can only imagine that they do this to try and compinsate for something lacking in there life. Thank god the majority of people on here are helpful decent folks.

You know what? ........ Most the folks on the Hunting part of CGN are NOT "egotistical smart ass's", but a bunch of good guys that like to kid around and have a good time, not unlike the kind of good natured kidding a newbie would get at a hunting camp.

Take a pill and get with the program, it's WAY more fun.

I have no problem with a little ribbing and as I said most people on here are great. I just get a little tired of the same old smart remarks time after time to all the newbies like myself. No pill needed here I can laugh along with the rest of them.

My maverick came out of the box with one and I was in the same damn situation as you.

For future reference (if somehow this is found via the search function), to remove it you must:
1) Ensure the gun is unloaded, then do it again
2) Remove barrel
3) Hold gun, minus barrel, and shake it living #### out of it
4) You will see the end of the dowel poking through the hole that the barrel screws into, pull it out
