Guess?
I just bought a Chinese SKS and I am in the middle of tearing her down for cleaning. After following the instructions on surplusrifle, I found that when I removed the handguard, the gas piston and spring did not eject on me. It seems to be stuck inside the tube/handguard. Is it that dirty in there? What should I do to remove it? Gun oil? Penetrating oil?

It's probably just a little dirty...give it a tap on a towel over a hard surface and it will usually pop out..otherise use your cleaning rod to tap it out. There is no spring in the handguard....it's in the piston hole below the rear sight...move the handguard catch slowly and it should pop out..be carefull cause it is under some pressure.

Thanks Clobber. I got it out, but the piston won't release. The lock is in the right position, but she won't spring out. Is it that dirty too? Should I try and tap it out, being careful not to let her fly?

Place a towel over the front of it to catch the parts, move the lever (lock)back and forth and give it a tap...it'll should come out...if not spray some G96 or in a pinch WD 40 and let it sit for 1/2 and hour...then try again..it's just dirty...

the piston in the rear sight is called an piston extension, its under pressure by a spring , lift the catch further up and towards the front . if it doesnt fly out then repeat the process while using a nail or something sharp and push on the back of the piston extension , you can see it at the rear of the rear sight , it the part that drives the carrier backward.

since these tube are biigger than a 308 brush , i use an old 12g shotgun brush to clean them .
