I am considering buying a 9mm pistol for occasional range use. My requirements are accuracy, reliability and a price under $500.

I was thinking of either a CZ-75 or Walther P1. Can anyone comment on the accuracy of either of these guns and make a recommendation?

thank you

CZ75 is an amazing gun and new would run you ~$610-620. You should be able to get a used one in very good shape for under $500.
I dunno about Walther, so cannot comment.

while the P-1 has some cool going for it, the CZ is much easier to get parts, mags, holsters etc for. Also if you catch the bug with the CZ you're good to go for casual match use. The CZ is a great all around pistol, the P1 shows the age of it's design.

I bought a CZ 75B for casual shooting and have no regrets about my choice. It's more accurate than I am, solidly built, and goes bang every time.

CZ all the way.

To echo the above comments.........a P1 would be a great plinker and that is about it. A CZ can lead to plenty of fun shooting *DPA or IPSC as funds allow.

CZ question

Both guns not my first choice. Both of them and almost all types like them have no front barrel bushing so accuracy could be good, but not superb.
If accuracy is paramount, then go for bigger dollars.
As for the CZ lovers, parts are easy to get? Really?
My friend ruined a CZ75 slide, the original one with the blue paint. Would like to just drop a new slide, minus the barrel on the frame.
How much and where?

Not to pick on you, but this guy has a budget. "You want better just spend more..." Yah, No Sh*t! ;) On average, isn't that true with most products. I'll take the Lexus any day, but that's not in the budget. Not everyone is willing to spend 1200+ on a pistol. One could buy 2 that are 98% as good and for 99.5% of the people on this forum's skill level, are plenty accurate enough.

As much as I admire the mystique of the Walther P1 it is a dated design. I would opt for the CZ 75B and then buy a CZ Kadet 22 conversion unit it. Regards, Richard:)

Thanks for the advice. I'm currently shooting a Russian TT-33 (with 9mm conversion) and am not convinced that this is a very accurate pistol.

This may be a very stupid question (so please excuse my ignorance), but can I expect to get better accuracy froma CZ-75 as compared with a 9mm Tokarev?

Cz vs P1

Why not get both...
have a P1 and a CZ 75 and love them...
they are very different pistols alltogether: P1 has an aluminum frame versus the all steel CZ, so there is a difference in weight.
they have two totally different designs...
actually the CZ's design (Browning) is older than the P1's design, that means both guns are outdated...however they a heck of fun to shoot..
accuracy wise they are probably on the same level, it always depends on the quality of ammo!...

In a perfect world it would be nice, however I am on a budget and am only looking for an accurate affordable 9mm for occasional range use. As mentioned I currently have a 9mm TT-33, but I am pretty sure it's not as accurate as a P1 or a CZ75 - and I am looking for a pistol that shoots better than I (which is not saying much) so that I can improve. I like the TT-33 but find its accuracy sometimes frustrating. I also think the availability of the .22 conversion kit might make the CZ-75 an interesting option.

richardoldfield - is there a big difference between the CZ75 and CZ75B? Also would a CZ Kadet 22 conversion unit fit either?
thanks

For a lot of people think more expensive gun and bigger name will shoot better, but in the real commerical world is not the case. I've been hunting perfect gun at a reasonable price for seven years, I've been asked many people to try their gun and also offer them to shoot my CZ and 686, I never come across any gun that feel so good and accurate like the CZ. I didn't say the other gun are not as good as CZ but they just don't feel right in my hand and I am not able to took a good shot.
This thread will give you more insight of how good is CZ line of guns.

Thanks for this advice and especially the link :)

CZ75s and CZ75 transition pieces command higher prices. The truth is the CZ75B, with an improved safety, is a safer gun to carry. I really see little difference in quality. Regards, Richard:)

I think that the ergonomics and fit/finish or the CZ along with it's more modern design elements would make it an easier handgun to shoot more accurately. Having said that, a Tokarev could beat the a$$ off a $3000 1911 rig; depending on the shooters using them.

The surplus P1's are a great value for casual plinking...essentially a quality modern (compared to a TT33) European gun for a military surplus price. My P1 from Trade Ex is very accurate for its class (DA/SA military/LE design).
That's where it ends though, however. The 8 rounds single stack combined with the euro mag release and long DA pull wouldn't make it a great gun for action/competition shooting...like mentioned above, it is dated in that context. It is, however, perfectly safe for use in this context.

If you have future competition in mind, definitely go with the CZ, but if you are only looking for casual plinking I think that they would both be great options, however the P1 would be a better value IMHO.

Edit: There is a .22 subcaliber kit for the P1 as well
