Last weekend i had the opportunity at EESA's open house to shoot a round of trap and i just have to say what a blast! Dont think i did real well for my first time (hit 3 outta 10) but needless to say, i had a lot of fun and its something i would like to do on a more regular basis.

So my question is this, since i'm new to this particular sport and really don't know a whole lot about it, what all should i bring with me besides my shotgun?
Which choke should i use for a beginner?
Should i bring my own ammo, or just buy it there?
Since i'm a member, how much should i expect to pay for my day of fun?

Sorry for all the noob type questions, but who better to ask, then ppl on this site who have "been there, done that." Thanks for any help offered! :) I can't wait for this Sunday to give it a real try!:shotgun:

I just show up with my 870 the price for ammo at EESA is pretty good.

As to a choke I use my modified or my IC.

You will want to get a ammo pouch at some point in time to hold your box of shells on your hip. They are inexpensive and make it alot easier.

Glad you had fun at the Open House...........your post is exactly one of the reasons I organize them. To introduce total newbies to shooting and existing gun owners to the variety of shooting sports we have.

Modified choke is the place to start for 16 yard trap. Buy your shells were they are the cheapest. Club shells are rarely the least expensive but are a revenue source for the club and a nice backup if you didn't bring enough ammo with you.

I don't know what the rates are at EESA as I've never shot there but generally in Southern Ontario a round of trap will range from $3.50 to $5.00 for club members. Non-member rates at clubs are 50 to 100 per cent more and rightfully so.

Thanks Stormbringer! What a great idea to have open houses like that. Not only did i get to try some new sports (like trap) but i also got to try a bunch of military rifles and the AR-15's! Not something i've ever got to do, unless i met someone at the range with those types. Don't forget all the different types of handguns too. Actually i think i just coverted my gf into a gunnut. After shooting a Glock 9 mm she couldn't stop talking about getting her Rpal and such! All thanks to EESA and their members! :dancingbanana:

BTW, thanks for the tip regarding the ammo hip bag, i thought about adding that in my post, but must have forgot.

LOL!!

That was my 18 year old daughters Glock 17 (the only 9mm one there). She will be pleased to know that it helped convert another female.

I gave it to her when she was 15 for Christmas. If the two of you want to come out to EESA some time I can get you range time again with it as my guests.

Thanks a lot for the offer Stormbringer, and i may just have to take up on that offer sometime! :D

Actually i'm a member at EESA arlready and i'm sure we met this past winter at the 300 yard range while i was shooting my Remmy in the cold. LOL I haven't been to a club meeting for a few months so i definately need to come out and catch up on club related events. I do have some extra time on my hands right now, so i would like to do my fair share of volunteer work as well. Do you know who i could let know that i would like to help out sometime?

$7 a pop for shells is a little high. You can buy Federals or Remingtons by the flat (10 boxes) for $50 - $55. Buy a few flats and have some fun.

trap

Gyler first let me say, Great looking pair of dogs in your picture. I am a great fan of goldens.
Everything is going up I think shells are $60 a flat or $6 a box.
I heard our next batch of targets are going up too. So I think there will be a price increase to reflect that.
Modified choke for 16 yards is fine. Something little tighter for handicap.
Good bunch of guys shoot there, nothing too serious just busting clay

Work bees are the first Saturday of the month............

Includes LUNCH!

That said if you are an EESA member you should have gotten PLENTY Of hours in last weekend!!

Yeah i know, last weekend would have been great to get those volunteer hours in....unfortunately i was only availiable Sunday and that was the day i wanted to bring my gf out for some fun. Oh well, i don't mind fixing targets and such, especially with a free luch. :)

Hey Kenny, thanks for the info. Busting clays is all i want to do! Do you shoot trap out there often? If so, maybe i'll see you out there! BTW, i couldn't ask for a better pair of dogs. :D

Trap

Yes I pretty much shoot there or some where else every Sunday.
I have been shooting alot of sporting clay as of late, but trap is always good to get back to basics.
I lost my Golden in Jan She died at 4 years old, my best friend. This weekend I have a new little Golden, just 50 days old.
So sleep is a little scarce this week but it will get better.
Good luck with trap great game

I'm sorry to hear about your Golden Kenny. Its hard losing mans best friend. I think you did the right thing by getting another and hopefully it helps getting you thru this tough time. Did you get another female?? If you can, i'd love to see a pic of your 7 week old pup...

Shooting trap update

Well i went out yesterday and shot trap for my first time. I have to admit i got "the bug" now... What a blast! Had a great time and met some really nice people. I have to admit i was a little nervous in the beginning but after a little instruction (help) from some of the other members i was soon breaking my fair share of clays. :D

So all in all, i played 5 rounds that went like this....

1. 10/25
2. 10/25
3. 7/25 (got some help after this round)
4. 12/25

then my 5th and last round i shot a 16/25!!!

I couldn't believe it! What a feeling breaking 5 in a row in the last round and i really felt like i was getting better and better. Can't wait till next weekend and see if i can hit 20!! :shotgun:

So 3 1/2 hours later it was $45 well spent. What a great game and i look forward to introducing my friends and family to it.
