Bolt fluting ??

I just recently had a Rem 700 bolt spiral fluted from a place in the US. Looks pretty much like the remington Ti bolt now. I spoke with a smith in Edmonton that said he'd do it but he wanted something like $250. Forget that. I think when mine was all said and done it was around $80 including shipping both ways.

I was impressed with the work and in the future, I'll be sending him more work.

Any problems with shipping a bolt over the border?? I wouldn't want to send it down there and then have a ##### of a time getting it back.

Who did the work??

I asked the same question before I sent it down. I disassembled it before shipping so it was only the bolt body. The guy I spoke with said he's never had any trouble sending things back.

For what I had done, I think it was $60 plus $15 return shipping. Took him a couple of weeks to do. I did have to pay customs when I picked it up. He put the value of the package at $100 and I think it was roughly $10 in customs fees when I picked it up at the post office.

He has a lot of different patterns and designs. I just sent him a picture of a remington Ti bolt and said thats what I wanted.

The place is called Twisted Barrel. http://w ww.twistedbarrel.com

I'll have to take a couple of before and after pics of my bolt.

Here are a couple of pics of the bolt I had fluted.
I havent decided on the method of finishing it yet, so its still in the raw.

Before: - cruddy semi-blued, semi-rusty, semi-jewled bolt

After: - semi-polished, non-jewled, fluted bolt

Rocky Mountain Rifles in BC, has bolt fluting as an option on thier web site. I have no idea if they do straight or spiral though. Worth a call to try and keep the work in Canada imho.

They only straight flute. I would like to send a bolt south aswell, but without confirmation that it is legal I wont send it....a rifle with no bolt isnt all that useful.:runaway:

I sent a bolt body to have a new handle welded on and he can't send it back!! Seems the USpost office considers it a banned item. I'm still waiting JITC

I think the difference here may be that Mike just sent the bolt body, with no handle, shroud or firing pin.

Not to knock the place but I paid $60 US, and they have it advertised as $175 CAN.
Mind you, I had to pay $12 to ship it each way. :)
Twisted Barrel uses a CNC machine. You can probably bet that once he has all the programming done and saved, he just puts an empty bolt body in a jig, has a coffee for 15 minutes and just like that, its done.
Next bolt with the same pattern, back in the jig, another cofffee and voila...another fluted bolt.

I say good on the guy for producing something unique and selling it for a fair price. Now thats how businesses make money.

If I could set up my CNC mill to do this Op. do you think it would be worth while?
How many bolts do you think are out there, needing fluting?
One could do some cool stuff. You could start a regular spiral flute and reverse it 1/2 way down the bolt.
I have the CNC it would need another stepper and driver to power my dividing head. I think it could be done.
I’ve always wanted a 4th axes on my mill to engrave barrels too.

I think for the right price people would be interested. There will always be the hard core shooters that dont care what their rifle looks like, as long as it shoots. I'm sure there are just as many if not more people who dont mind spending a few extra dollars on a favorite rifle to jazz it up a bit. For me, the $60 US I spent, I figured why not give it a try. It's only $60. But if I had to pay $175 for the fluting, forget it.

Im sure its pretty time consuming to get a CNC machine all programmed to do the fluting, but once you have that program or a few various styles, the ammount of work after to do the fluting for others would be minimal.

took me about 5 minutes to program our machining center for flutes. I did one for myself a while back, some of you may remember "the Frankenrifle"

Friend of mine just got a new Haas VF-2 with 4th axis....we plan to do some bolt fluting on our own rifles when we have time...
