Bullet Testing Box

I built this out of 3/4" spruce plywood today. I am going to get some threaded rod that will be used to compress the newspapers or phone books that I will use for a test medium.
I forgot to buy the threaded rod, when I picked up the plywood, so it's not quite finished.

I also have a notion to buy some folding legs to put on it, so I don't have to depend on a table or saw horses. It weighs about 40 lbs I think; it's not too tough to pack short distances anyways.

Right now the front is a full 1-1/2" thick, but I think will use a hole saw to knock out a couple of 4" circles in that, to fire through. I like the idea of the bullets impacting only into the newspaper.
The piece of plywood in the middle of the box, that the 2/4" is screwed to, slides. Depending on what lengths the rod comes in, I may have to extend the length of that slot, in the sides.

I won't get around to doing any tests with this for about a month, but I thought people might be interested in this contraption.

Some vital info'; overall length is about 65", interior dimension is 15"x12". The length was kind of arbitrary, basically what was left after cutting down the rough lengths to build the box panel ends.

I hope it is long enough to handle the .416RM and .458 Lott. I am contemplating putting a piece of plate steel across the back of the box if I find it will not stop those big bullets. I want to test some 400 and 500gr solids. :sniper:

I think the hard part will be getting a reliable supply of newspapers. The local recycle depot isn't interested in helping me out. I can get papers from the town newspaper, but I don't know how many they can supply every week.
When I am shooting the smaller calibers like .30-06, it shouldn't require too much paper to stop the bullets and I will be able to recycle some of the shot-up papers to the back of the box.

Cost me about $35 so far...

Demonical....good looking contraption but you definitely need to open up a large hole in the front so you are shooting into the test medium only and not through the plywood. It wouldn't take many shots through the plywood before you had to replace it plus you won't get an accurate look at how the bullets are performing. I'd be tempted to take the plywood off all together and make a frame from angle iron to attach your threaded rod to. That way your opening can be nearly as large as the front of the box with enough strength to compress the medium with the rods.

sheephunter I'm thinking of knocking out a couple of holes, 4" to 6", something like that. I originally thought I would make 4 holes and get 4 shots for each stack of fresh paper, but I'm not too sure the paper would support that many bullet holes. But I think 2 should be okay.

Demonical,
I've got .416 400 grain Banded Solids, 350 and 400 grain TSXs, 400 grain A-Frames, 350 gr Speers and 350 grain cast bullets that I'd donate for your science project. Interested?

Wow! Sure, I'd try those Dogleg.

If you have specific load data I could just use that?

FYI, currently for the .416 I have 400gr Hornady IL's, 400gr Nosler P's and 400gr Hornady solids.

P.S. Did you get that spring? Was it okay for your use?

Demonical,
I shoot Rigby while you shoot Rem Mag so my load data won't do you any good, but the bullets might. PM me an address and I'll mail 'em.
I'm out on a rig right now, so don't know if the spring arrived or not.

laying in the dirt, bent over the picnic table

nice looking box D-man. Im sure it will work well.

PS I find it kinda funny you worry about the price of TSX hunting bullets for your rifles but you have a supply of FMJ's :D

if you have them, used telephone books are good to use as a paper medium, especially the yellow pages.
