OAL for 16" 870 with top folding stock?

16" with pistol grip or folding stock is a bit over 26". with a bit of luck and the right grip you can make 26" with a 14" barrel.

however something else has come up over the 16" barrels floating around, that officially Remington has never made one... and the 16" barrels might be cut down = prohib.

I remember someone saying something about that. Just because it looks like Remington never offered a 16" for sale doesn't mean they never made a special run for a law enforcement contract. I have a friend with a factory 18 3/4" vent rib, he's never seen another one, and he has the box, complete with details, to prove it.

Now I will admit that the possibility exists that they are cut downs, but if they are, it was the police who did it, so they in fact, would be the ones guilty of manufacturing a prohib. Don't think they'd be too quick to lay charges on that one.

Police are exempt and can have prohibitted firearms.

But are they allowed to manufacture prohibs as per Leg's comment? ;)

Arwen Ace, you bring up an interesting point. The police are allowed to be in possesion of prohibs and perhaps manufacture them. Let's suppose though that they chopped some barrels to 16" and did a bad job of it i.e with a hacksaw and file, so that it's obvious it's not factory. They then eventually surplus the shotguns off and you end up with the shotgun. Is the shotgun still a prohib, non-restricted or what? What do you tell the CO/LE when they question you? What if they never change the registration to reflect this change?

I had a chance to pick up a supposedly ex-police wingmaster with a 13" barrel with rifle sights for what I thought was a pretty cheap price. I passed since Remington has never made a 13" to my knowledge and I didn't want to get myself into trouble over a shotgun that the police may have altered.

As long as the altered barrel (below 18") is on the shotgun it is a prohibitted shotgun no matter who altered it. The question is: was the barrel manufactured that way? If it was cut down it is not manufactured that way. This is why Dlask can sell short barrels. They make them short, they do not alter barrels.

These surplus guns may have been transfered to another in a prohibitted state, that does not make it legal to posess them.

Anyone care to answer my original question? What is the exact OAL?

Depends on the length of the folder for an "exact" length.
What folder are you thinking of?
Pretty easy to do the math if you know the length of your folder and any other Remington barrel...a 16 inch will be 2.5" shorter then an 18.5" or 2 " longer then a 14"er

A Knoxx Spec Ops folder is just under 26" with a 12.5 inch barrel and about 27 1/4 Inches with a 14 "

I'd imagine a 16" with a Specops Folder would be 29 1/4"
