Hello,
I posted a thread in the reloading forum and thought it may go here as well (newbie):

I have a question for the target gurus in here. I was wondering if anyone has experience shooting the stock Rem 700 SPS Varmit in 243 Win, using Hornaday 105 AMax. If so, how were the groupings at say, 600 and 1000 yards? I'm interested in purchasing this rifle and putting some holes in some unsuspecting paper and am concerned about the 1 in 9 and one eigth twist.

The master plan is to replace the stock one day, but I'm wondering if this rifle will be a good starter, or just an avenue of frustration?
Thanks in advance.

105 A-Max are suited for 1:8 twists your factory remmy twist is 1:9 so for target bullets Try 95 gr A-Max or the Sierra SMK in the closest wieght bullet you can get to perfect for thet twist is 95 gr. I have shot some 100 grainers in mine with success as well, vut the 105s are just a bit to long for what you want.

It never hurts to try it if you all ready bought them.

Are also lots of guys on this forum that shoot the 80s with good results.

Regards

Thanks for all the info. I haven't purchased anything yet ( 3 weeks of precision shooting under my belt). I've been lucky enough to be using a fellow CGNer's 700P. The fellows I shoot with do a 1000 yards (243 and 300 Win mag), so I thought I'd get the 700 in 243 (nice heavy barrel), put a Bushnell 4200 on it and someday get an HS stock. I'll try the lower weight bullets. Thanks again.

Try the 105's and see if it works. FWIW, your .243 Win. may have the velocity necessary to stabilize the bullet in flight. Barrel twist rate is important but the velocity has to be there or else it won't stabilize to begin with.

The 105 Amax is actually meant for a 1:9, although it works just great in a 1:8. My experience with the SPS varmint in 204 was a pleasant surprise. Nice gun for the money.

When I tried the 105 a-maxs and the 107 sierras in my 700 they both shot like crap .I even tried really pushing them to get the velocity but to no avail. But have tried the 80`s and 95`s and they shot pretty good.Right now I have been having pretty good results with 87 v-maxs out to 800 yards at borden.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to purchase many various weights and see what works best. More time at the range, what a shame!
Thanks everyone.

That's probably the best idea.

For my Savage 12fv in .243 I tried a few different weights until I found the 65gr Vmax shot the best.

For heavy stuff I use the 95 gr SST from Hornandy and have had decent results. MOA of a clay pigeon at 500 if we get the wind right. I'm still playing with the 95gr Bergers but havn't had much range time this summer.

Make sure you tell us what you find out.
