As the title says.....270 ammo load for coyote's....does it exist? Some may be asking why a 270....well its the only center fire I have and don't/can't be buying another one at the present time.....so just wondering if I can use my 270 for yotes? Can I purchase ammo that will do the job and not completely destroy the hide? If I reload can I make a load that will work? thanks for you input....I currently own a savage 270 long rifle....

barnes solids if you reload....I believe 110 grains are available and will do little pelt damage. 110 hp bullets if you don't collect the hides. Huge exit wounds with the hollow point under 200 yards. It works great

Its not like your going to eat them, blast away with whatever you have on hand.

FMJ should put a nice hole in him the same size roughly going in and coming out, shouldn't it? I'm sure there must be FMJ 270 bullets around, no?

For Factory loads you could try the Remington 100gr PSP or the 115 Managaed Recoil load. For pelt damage I would think that the managed recoil might be better, but it will give more drop. For handloading you can sometimes find Remington bulk 115 FMJ designed for the 6.8mm at Wholesale Sports, these would proabably be best for coyotes, because they won't blow up the pelts, and you can work up a flat accuarte load. I've tired Hornady 110 HP and they seem reasonably accurate, but from the results on gophers I think they might cause some exit hole damage. Good luck!

I can't comment on the handloads. But I know that the Winchester 150gr Power-point and the Remington 140gr Ballistic tips will pretty much make the hide useless to you.

(I know this, as these are the only two ammo that feeds reliably in my 7400) and is what I use to get rid of nuisance coyotes.

Another solution would be use the most accurate bullet you can find and take only head and neck shots. A coyote head is a fairly big target compared to say, a gopher.

Are you reloading? If so, work up a load using Sierra 115 grain Matchkings. A V-Max will likely blow big holes in the hide. A Hornady 130 gr. SST might be ok.
Most .270 factory ammo is loaded for large game. Limits your options.
Federal loads a 110 grain Barnes TSX, but they'd be horrendously expensive if you can find any.
Mind you, if you're hide hunting this time of year, the hides won't be prime.

Yes they do. But if you want to save the hide you have to pick up all the pieces.

I'm not convinced that the .270 is a good round for pelt preservation. I find it very explosive. I'd think something from .17 to .22 caliber would be a better choice.

By all means - my first choice for 'yotes is my .223 Rem. ;)

As stated earlier, the pelt on a coyote is pretty much worthless in the height of summer. The hide would be blue, and the fur would be about as thick and luxurious as the comb-over on a substitute math teacher.:D

Smacking one with with a .270 Win this time of year won't make matters worse.:sniper:
