I've been looking for an after market barrel (so I can use cheaper lead plinking bullets) for my G17C that aligns with the factory porting in the slide but all the comped barrels I'm finding have circular holes in the top of the barrel.

Help?

You'll probably have a tough time finding an after market barrel that will align wit your pistols ports. Porting in my experience has never attributed anything to reducing recoil or improving control. You can run a non ported barrel with no issues.

A recent CGN'ers review of his new G17C read that he felt there was a reasonable decrease in muzzle rise due to the porting, enough of one to warrant spending the extra cash perhaps. I suppose guys wouldn't put big comps on the ends of their 1911's if they didn't do anything right?

I'd just buy a non-ported barrel for use with lead bullets like TDC suggested, the difference between the two might be noticeable, but I doubt it'll be by much.

maybe not much difference with a 9mm gun but with a .44mag you'd notice a difference trust me...;)

Unless you shoot magnum calibre handguns(as IM Luger pointed out), there is no need for a comp. Comps are like magazine well funnels(or whatever they're called), laser sights, weighted grips/grip plugs, trigger jobs, and adjustable sights. Nothing more than training wheels for those who fail to learn and/or master the fundamentals of handgun shooting.

Some folks have never owned a firearm without a comp, so how could they possibly notice a difference? Many in the shooting community shoot less than once a month and fire less than 1000 rounds a year. With that kind of irregularity its no wonder their skills don't improve. Shooting is a perishable skill.
