I was wondering if anyone has used the McMillan HTG stock (i.e. the one used in the USMC M40A1). I am considering using this stock in a project in the relatively near future. I am curious to know how the stock shoots from a rest but also how it handles for shooting off hand etc. I really like the look of the stock, but of course it has to function well. I think the A5 is sweet but I think it may be less versatile (but I could be wrong on that point). Any insight would be appreciated.

I have an htg (and an a5). Both very comfortable, the a5 is far more comfortable from a bench or prone, but the htg is more comfortable for sitting/offhand, and is also considerably lighter, though the stock fill has a lot to do with this.
 
I think the HTG is the more versatile one for what you're describing but if you were into a more tactical/BR discipline, I would say the A5 would be the one.

The HTG now comes with an adjustable cheek rest..pretty impressive if you ask me.

Thanks guys. I guess to expand on the intended use of the rifle.......

I want the rifle to able to shoot well off a rest (read: backup F-class rifle but not it's primary role), I will shoot it for casual target shooting (eg. shooting off of bales on the farm etc.) and it may see a little bit of hunting action if something were to happen to my .270 during deer season. So I guess it's a bit of a jack of all trades rifle. I have a nice target rifle (40-xb in 7mm Rem mag) and a decent hunting rifle (my .270). I have a .243 that I want to tinker with. I plan on putting a heavy (varmint weight) barrel on it in .260 rem. I guess I'm debating on what stock to put on it.

Would the HTG be any more stable (i.e. a bit flatter) than a normal sporter stock? Maybe the A5 or the A1-3 is the way to go.

Maybe my expectations are a little unrealistic. Wouldn't be the first time!
 
HTG/M40A1 stock in my opinion is the best all around stock ever made. Many will argue, but for every single position, there is nothing better, it is both light and versatile and the fit and feel is out of this world.
 
If the stock fit your build, than it would be the best stock, otherwise is just another stock. my best stock would be something in a Mcmillan A5, A3, A2, and AICS.

I have a very similar build in the works right now, for the same reasons you stated. Specs for the rifle will be:

M70 Long Action
6.5x55mm
Pac-Nor #6 Contour fluted barrel
McMillan HTG stock

I'm just waiting on the barrel before sending it off to the smiths and I haven't ordered the stock yet because I have an A5 on order and want to see how the "swirly" colours turn out on it, before I place the order for the HTG. It should be up and running by late winter though.

the htg stock is a very good all round stock. I have ordered and received 5 from mcmillan. four of them are on remington 40x rifles....2x7.62nato and 2 5.56 and 1 on a rem 700 HB 5.56. you can't beat the service and help they provide to make your rifle.

What options did you add that you liked or disliked and what did you wish you added to the stock? I'm pretty sure that this is the stock I want to go with but I am curious how others have ordered them (ie. with aluminum pillars, textured vs smooth etc.)

I know ATRS Rick brought a few used ones from the USMC sniper det which converted to the A5 but that was a while back..He was asking $200 or so for them but were in mediocre shape, needed a lot of TLC, paintstripping etc..

Looking fwd to it...I think you & GunBoy have similar set-ups in a 6.5mm Mauser configuration.

I have yet to decide what is my next rig but I can tell you that I'll be aiming for a 6.5 cal via the custom route. :p
