I recently bought a used CIL 12 ga. shot gun but I haven't fired it yet, how do I know if it is ok to shoot steel shot through it, I think it has only fired lead. What will happen if I shoot steel through it?

What model is it? Is it a pump ,sxs ? Is it stamped full on the barrel? If it's a pump marked model 607 , it's really a savage model 67. If it's stamped full on the barrel, then your local gunsmith can open up the choke to make it OK for steel shot. If it's a sxs the left barrel is full choke and it can be opened up as well. CIL is just a trade name , they never made any guns. They are an entry level gun, that if looked after, can be handed to your grandchildren.I have three. Best of luck.

CIL sold more than entry level guns. They handled Anschutz and Franchi firearms mamoung others and neither of these brands are entry level.

Yes they did. I stand corrected. However some of their guns were of the less expensive variety.
Yes, the 607, 621, pumps, etc and their SXS's were what would be considered entry level guns, but the Frachis, and Anschutz firearms they sold very super quality.

Their pumps were , for the most part OEM for them by Savage who also made some o their SXS shotguns.
Boito and CBC also made break action guns for them.
For the most part, the Savage guns were a fixed barrel, and I am not sure if it is feasible to open up a full choke for them , due to labour costs......

Yes i was referring to the 607,621 as entry level. Boito made the model 402 single shot, that in the 60's and 70's were as popular around these parts as the cooey 840. I open chokes, not chrome lined ,for $50.00 so it's probably cheaper than buying another gun. I've seen a few that had steel shot through them, but they were more improved modified although they were stamped full. The Franchis and anschutz were very good guns.

I checked on the barrel and it is marked CIL 621 H (it is a pump)so should I get it bored out. Somebody told me that if I can fit a dime in the barrel it would be good enough, does that sound right or is that just stupid?

The dime idea is an old wives tale. What actually determines choke , is the rate of constriction between the bore dimension and the muzzle dimension. The only way to know the actual choke is to have the bore and the muzzle measured. Since there can be a variance from one barrel to the next , some barrels stamped full, are actually measured as improve mod. or even more open.A trip to your local gunsmith can give a precise rate of constriction and thus give you an idea of how much choke needs to be removed.
