I am trying to find a reliable and accurate ammo for hunting. Let's say, for 60-80 meters distance with 36-40 gr bullet.
I have tried four different (cheap ;)) ammos but I'm not impressed (to say the least...) with the accuracy.
The Federal 525 shoots really bad (about 6" at 50m). The Winchester Xpert is better (4"), the Dynapoint shoots approx. 2.5" and the Remington shoots 1.5" groups. I am using a BSA 4x scope.
What works best in your 597?

Haven't tried any expesive stuff except for Mini-Mags (which didn't do well).
Of all the ones I have tried, American Eagle HPs seem to be the best.
I'm going to try some hyper velocity stuff, but with the AEs, if I do my part, I can smack golfballs at +/- 100 yards without a problem.

Keep trying brands. The cost doesn't make any difference. Some rifles will shoot the cheap stuff and not the expensive stuff.
A scope won't make any rifle shoot better. They just allow you to see the target better.

Mine worked best when I returned it and got my money back

Must be the shooter! ;)

mine favored the rem golden bullets until it developed the 2 round burst, then i sold it

This went away, along with the heavy trigger pull, with a VQ hammer.

I find most decent ammo works quite well. I've had great results (5 shot cloverleafs @ 20m) with all kinds of ammo.
Seems to suffer a bit with the bulk ammo, but still far better than my 10/22.
IIRC the Federal Champion (non-bulk) 40gr. solids did as well as anything.

The Federal 525 shoots really bad (about 6" at 50m).
Whoa? I can stay under 4in at 100yards with Fed. Champion plated ammo! At 50 2in isn't hard... it's not the ammo...get a good rest and scope and you'll be fine ;)

I was using the cheapo Federal 525 bulk.
But I was shooting with the exact same set up (rest, scope, distance) and the Remington 1522-A performed best (1 1/8" at 50 meters).
I just went out to my local gun store and bought three different CCI ammos. I'll see how they shoot.

Mine is also firing 2 shot bursts. Definitely not a cleaning issue. Spooks the noobs so I may dump the rifle.... Sad cuz I was a big fan at first.

my 597's like the CCI Mini-Mag 40gr. the best. no problem chambering ,
ejecting and very accurate too ...

mine loves the federal 525 bulk packs and CCI blasers.
After about 2000 rounds now, I was getting a lot of FTEs, so I pulled out the bolt tonight and found tons of crud in there to clean out. Now it should work like before I figure.
Man those springs were hard to get back on the rails when I put them back in!

Another test today with the following ammos (best 5 shot groups, measured with flyer):
CCI STINGER - terrible !!! 5" groups, couldn't find 5th shot
CCI QUIK-SHOK - terrible !!! all over the paper, 5" groups
CCI MINI-MAG - best group 13/16"
American Eagle 40gr Solid - 15/16"
American Eagle 38gr Hollow Point - 1 2/16"
With some practice I could tighten the groups but not bad for the first time. So far the winners are CCI MM and AE 40gr.

Mine likes, in order: CCI Minimags, Remington Subsonics and Federal Bulk packs. It really hates Stingers and Winchester bulk packs, everything else shoots so-so out of it.
