You can still find on eBay cases of those little greases pots that were issued with the M1 Garands, but I'm not sure if they ship up to Canada. What's a good alternative for the rifle grease. I haven't got to the point yet where my M1 seems to need it, but I have a feeling CLP maybe a little thin for the job.

Just use bearing grease from walmart or an autoparts store. The synthetic stuff is great for cold weather. A tube will last forever. I use the white lithium grease.

"...haven't got to the point yet..." It should be regreased after every time you clean it. You don't need military issue grease.

I've only had to do a proper cleaning once, and I was careful about how I did it. I haven't fired it enough really to warrant more than a few pull throughs of the barrell.

But thanks for the advice...I'll try to pick some grease up in the next little while as I need to give it a good clean soon.

Any pointers on where/how to grease exactly?

Get yourself a syringe with the biggest end on it you can find. Fill it with grease and have ater. It works great for the bolt roller area and op rod guide on my M14. I got it from TSC, it was around 10 bucks. Money well spent, since you don't have to take the gun appart to grease it.

That was a problem with the early Garands,.. the heavy rain in the South Pacific washed away the grease ,..and caused stoppages,.
