I went out to the range today (100 yard) with my Remington VTR 700 .223 22" Barrel 1:9" twist. I just started reloading last week and this if my first rifle. I started shooting paper targets since January of this year.

I tested with LC Brass, Federal Primers and VARGET:

1) -Hornady 68 HPBT-
(5 loads each consisting of 24gr, 24.2gr, 24.4gr, 24.6gr, 24.8gr, 25gr, 25.2gr, 25.4gr, 25.6gr and 25.8gr)

2) -Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tip and Ballistic Silvertip-
(5 loads each consisting of 24.1gr, 24.3gr, 24.5gr, 24.7gr, 24.9gr/26.6gr, 26.8gr, 27gr, 27.2gr and 27.4gr)

Here is the Hornday 68 HPBT with 25gr Varget:

Here is the Nosler 55gr Ballistc Silvertip with 27gr Varget:

...and finally the Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tip with 27gr Varget:

For the Hornady, I'm going to play around with 24.9gr/25gr/25.1gr
For the Nosler, I'm going to play around with 26.9gr/27gr/27.1gr

don't take this the wrong way, those are great groups but if the same "mistakes" happen on every target then they are part of the group....

magazine writers do the same thing all the time "the new Wizbang 2000 shot 1/2 inch groups all day except for the unexplained flyers that opened the groups up to 1.5 inches...."

oh yeah i know what you mean by "mistakes". I'm just saying that I'm not a good shot yet and with proper practice and such there won't be anymore "mistakes" :)

Vtrguy you are doing just fine, i have been shooting for years benchrest and it happens to me expecially when you get 3 or 4 in one hole that 5th one seems to get away.
If you get a chance try some 69gr Sierra's they work extreemly good in my .223 with Rl 15 and the bigger 75gr work well with Varget and VT540 they work good in my Rem 700 with 1/9 twist

You might want to get a chronograph and check the velocity of your shots. I often find that flyers coincide with a velocity that's way off from what the others are showing.

Thank you Manitou.
I can't seem to find those 69gr SMK's. I've emailed P&D so we'll see if they have them. But I will definitely try those 69's and 75's.

It's weird though how my gun kinda likes those Nosler Ballistic 55grainers and it's a 1:9"
Cheers!:)
