Help With Sako Model 85 Stock Problem For A Small Hunter

I have a young friend that bought a New Sako SS Model 85 synthetic stock in 270.

The young guy weighs 95 lbs, and is 5' tall and has a problem walking. He had a stroke at age 14 which left him unable to walk for over a year, he went through years of rehabilitation and completely recovered except has some difficulty walking.
He loves the gun, and saved up to purchase it. He needs a shorter stock and would like a walnut stock so he can have it shortened to suit him.

I would really like to help him as we have hunted together for the past few years and is a model hunter. Any help would be appreciated.

The questions we have are:

Can he fit a Tikka walnut stock to his Sako model 85 or does he need a specific walnut stock for the Model 85?

Is there any after market stocks available, and are there any suppliers out there that can help us out.
 
He should have bought the wood/blued 85 to start with. I think the only place you'll get a walnut stock is from Stoeger, and you're looking at $500 for it. Tikka stock won't fit.
Try putting an ad in the EE looking to buy a wood 85 takeoff stock, or to trade your synthetic for it. Or trade the gun on a wood version.

I would cut the stock to suit, and fill the cavity in the stock with a block of wood and bisonite and screw the recoil pad back on.

You'd have to do a lot of carving, as the pad is curved quite a bit at the top of the stock (only on the synthetic model, the wood one is flat).

This might work if you took enough material off to get rid of the curve, and then bought a new grind-to-fit pad for it. Make sure you don't get too close to the removable cheek piece, as you might screw up the stock.

The Sako's are probably the worst fitting stock for a small shooter, as they have one of the longest LOP's on a factory rifle, at 14". I'm 6'2" and it fits me well, but at 5' it sounds like your friend would need to remove 2" or more, which puts you into the removable cheek piece.

Thanks Blargun I agree with you.
The custom McMillan with the LOP to his specs would be the answer.

Or it might be to his advantage to trade it for a wooden stock model. It would be cheaper than ordering a new stock and having it cut to fit. If he decides to sell it down the road the original stock would make it easier to sell.

He did mention he was thinking about a Remington as he could get more after market items for it. The Sako is much more expensive than a Remington so a trade would have to be a worth while trade. He would be interested in a tactical Remington.
 
He chose a fne rifle-I LOVE my Sakos but I prefer the model 75 stocks over the m85. Macmillan stock gets my vote. Custom orders to length of pull, and other criteria. I'll PM you with a link for info.

I have a #5 wood stock but this may not help you as I believe it is for the magnum only actions. Check with the knowledgeable people on here who may be able to tell you more. If it will work for this youngster, I'll be glad to help at my cost.
