Depends on the length of the ammo you are using. If you do not want it to over tax the retaining nub, use 5 0r 6 ...as I have found that too many tend to bind the action with all the spring tension.

My 1971 '94 holds seven in the tube, and one in the chamber. My wifes 1949 '94, holds six in the tube, and one in the chamber.
Both are carbines, with full length mags.
