I am thinking of setting up a little clay/trap system at the cabin.

I can shoot over water, or over a marsh (and even towards a small area where there are 20 + foot trees).

There are cabins around, but none closer than 400 yards (much further in the 3 directions I would/could shoot).

I know even 7 1/2 shot from 12 ga. doesn't carry much punch beyond 80 yards or so, but what is the maximum carry range?

I don't really want to rain down on anyone or anything.

I guess the angle of aim is 30-50 degrees.

What is the range of 'standard light' .410 and bird shot from a 12 ga.?
 
It doesn't matter what gauge you are shooting, the only thing that generally changes in gauge is the amount of shot, they all shoot roughly the same velocity so carry shot approx. the same distance. 7 1/2 shot goes about 200 yards, 2 shot goes about 300 yards. That should give you an idea.
 
The federal range design and construction guidelines that the Ontario CFO has been preaching as the final word say the safety range for trap shooting with #7-1/2 shot is 208m, so you are more than fine.

Be aware the target fragments (and lead shot) are going to make a big mess of the area.
 
you can't shoot lead shot near water. Steel only. The clay fragments are really going to much up the place.
 
Our club in Alberta wanted to set up a trap range near a slough/lake years ago and we were not allowed to shoot towards the lake. While hunting upland near water is fine, we even back then couldn't set up a trap range. However if this is for personal use and your not becoming an approved range you might be fine.
 
Sorry, I meant you can't HUNT over water with lead shot, specifically waterfowl covered by the migratory bird act.

You can hunt waterfowl from a boat in Ontario, but I recall you have to have the motor out of the water. (i.e. not on the move) Also, you have to be within 300 meters from shore in some places (Long Point, Rondeau, Lake St Clair)
 
You can shoot lead shot over water all you want as long as you are not huting waterfowl!
Unless there is some provincial regualtions in your neck of teh woods. You would likely never get an approved club situated near water. Of course there are some already in existence.
