In th erigth circumstances, withthe right bullet, yeah, I'd use it. I've only killed one black bear with the .223, about 175 yards, 53gr TSX. Wasn't a monster bear, so I can't determine true performance, but it went in one side and out the other...:)

Here's my line up:

plinking I have a 17hmr stevens, havent had it out yet hopefully soon.

Groundhogs - 223 Rem, M70 Custom heavy barrel.
Coyotes - 243 Win, M70 lightweight in a McMillan Stock
Deer - 308 Win, M70 Classic Compact
Bear - 30-06, M70 Featherweight in a High-Tech Stock

Grouse and Small game I usually take one of my shotguns.

For deer in open farmland areas I use a Ruger #1B in .270 Winchester. It's proven to be very accurate and the 26" barrel is a very good thing with a .270.

For black bears in any terrain and all hunting in brush I use a Remington 700 in .35 Whelen. With the Whelen, shooting up to 250 is easy and 300 is still comfortable.

Other than that I've been carrying a 12 gauge/.308 Winchester combination gun. So far is has only been used on grouse and rabbits but hopefully that rifle barrel will come into play sometime.

Outside of big game hunting I use a Ruger #1V in .22-250 as my primary groundhog gun but I use the .270 and the Whelen as well for the sake of fun and good practice. In fact, I knocked off a hog at 277 paces with the Whelen last year with its 1.5-5x scope.
