Read that article...has some good information in it. Although I have personally not annealed my brass, this article is a good start to get someone on the right path.

Annealing is unfortunately poorly understood. No one seems to have an answer to your question that can be backed up with any kind of real data, they just have some anecdotal stories about what they tried and what they were happy with.

I have ideas of doing a real study into this issue for the home loader, but it hasn't happened yet. I have done some real fiddling around with annealing, and found that consistency seems to be more important than hitting any single point. In theory, heating the cases to red is too hot, but it might be a lesser evil compared to the variability I tended to get when using any other method of temperature determination.

Why are you tipping the cases over into the water?

i dont mean to over post on this subject , im using Da brass resized to 308 win, im gonna submerse half the brass in water to protect the web what would be the optune color for the shoulder and neck to be when i tip it over into the water, thanks for any help,

I've read to bring the neck to a dull red glow. I think that is too hot. When I anneal with a hand torch I bring the neck to a deep blue temper colour then tip it over.

I remember watching a program on American Shooter about how brass was made. After forming the cases were moved fairly quickly through two torch flames, they came out blue on the necks and they definitely never got to dull red. I also have some British RG Green Spot 7.62 match ammo that was not polished after annealing so you can still see the temper colours on then neck and shoulder, the neck is dark blue.

thanks for the help guys, ive got a torch here from crappy tire that has a bit of gas ill use to burn it off when i atempt to do this brass i had read that a blueish tint on brass was the right temp for anealing necks , also the brass is already trimmed and necksized just needs to be polished after anealing ,,

Another method is to dip the case neck/shoulder into molten lead with bare hands and drop cases into water after.Barehanded you won't overheat the case like a blowtorch may.................Harold
