ok, so i just got my second Enfield in as many days. The date stamp is pretty rough, so i couldn't get a good picture. but it reads M 1943 AS1676. On the action/reciever the letter No. 4 Mk 1 are engraved. above them in what looks like aftermarket engraving is No 4 MK1/2 (F) FTR. This gun has a brass cap on the end of the butt, whereas the other one has a plastic cap. the sight is also differnt, and the stock is quite different as well. the first rifle's stock is a bit larger and has a cheekpiece on the left side. the second is narrower with no cheekpiece. the magazine that came with the second rifle fits, although snugly, in the first rifle.

What's with the 'woodcarving'?  :puke:

- I actually have a bubba ROF #1MkIII*, someone was trying to make the buttstock like a Lee-speed, it looks like they took a piece of that crummy looking mahogany plywood that you would see on someone's bathroom door and put it in the recess for the unit disc, they were really good though, they sanded it down to fit, partially exposing the 2nd ply that was going crossgrain. . . :D

That's where most of us Enfield junkies started out, with a sporter. Neither of these is restorable without first replacing the barrels. The 1/2 FTR engraving indicates that the rifle was updated from Mk1 to MK2 specifications during it's military service. I'm personally wanting a 1/2 and might even take a sporter.

Ahhh... I started too with a No4, cut barrel, deer engraving on the butt stock...

I agree with fat tony: why??? :D

I think this also serves as a good example of a nice sporterized Enfield, and a not-so-successful one...

At least now FlyingHigh you have a magazine!

Yes that second one is definately bubba's work, I've owned a few like that :(

Now its another ROF Maltby No4 Mk1 that in 1951 went to Fazackerly for a rebuild, FTR (F)

What can you do with that one, well use it as a sporter, not really worth a rebuild as the barrel is chopper.

So right now your 0 for 2 on rebuildable enfields, but keep looking there are still lots out there

Unless you want to make a tanker :) then a cut barrel is not a problem :)

which reminds me I need to update my tanker build thread this weekend

what's a tanker?

yeah, i guess i'm starting to become a bit of an addict. i'll fix the first one up real nice, and use it as a back up gun got hunting. not sure what i'll do with the second one yet. it was free, so i wouldn't feel too bad about chopping it up and rebuilding something. the stock is smaller, so it would be a good size to teach the girlfriend how to shoot with.
