28 gauge question??

I understand what you are saying about the auto safety, I have a SXS 12 that has an auto safety and I guess I just ASSumed that all break open shotguns had an auto safety.

I do plan to reload for the 28. When I picked it up yesterday, I bought 5 boxes of Challenger shells (that was all they had). Does anyone know if they are suitable for reloading? I just need to get the conversion kit for a 700 VersaMEC and a reloading manual and then I'll be all set.

Yes, the 28 gauge Challenger hulls are reloadable.

I know you already have a 28ga, but +1 on the Baikal. I have one in an over/under config & love it.
If your going to reload for your 28 ga I would stick to STS hulls or the old style AA hulls as the newer AA hulls require a different wad & seem to be harder to load (more problematic) on my MEC progressive. Never heard of anyone reloading challenger 28 ga hulls, so let us know how that works.

who's the breeder ?

My brother and his wife breed Weims down in Windsor. Just wondering if you got one of his pups. They are great bird dogs, they made my past to pheasant hunts that much better.

The breeder is in London Ontario. His kennel name is Shadowpoint Weimeraners. All of his dogs are field dogs, all with various championships. Our pup seems to be showing great potential, I just need to learn how to bring it out of him. :D

Where would I find STS or AA hulls in 28? Are these available as a factory load? I did not think that they were all that common.

The dog in my pix is from North batleford Sask. The breeder was Melanie Steinacher. I am the third owner as the first ones split and gave her to a friend. Seeing as how they have a four year old and one year old kids and Dad is away for over a week at a time it was too much for Momma. The dog was seven months when I got her and I was a bit worried that she would have trouble "bonding". No problems .

As for the breeder's program I have only spoken to her once and she never mentioned any competition but she did say her dogs do point.
She is my first pointing breed but has a lot of natural ability. On one of her first experiences with huns I was disappointed as she was locked up on point but the birds were getting up behind her and she wouldn't even turn. Finally after 12 or so had flushed 3 more got up under her nose.
She has a great nose and will get scent at 20 yards or more even in very dry and very windy conditions. Last year, her first, she had not developed the technique of moving to locate the scent cones source but this year she will stop, then cast left to right and focus in on the location.
I am really looking forward to using her on huns, sharpies and wild pheasants this fall.

Yes they come in factory loads. If in T.O. area try Bass Pro or Lebarons. Not that hard to find just call around or start dumpster diving at local gun club. Ya never know you may come up lucky.... Ebay use to be a good place to find once fired hulls, but I don't know the rules about ebay or shipping anymore. Worth checking out, I would think.

Dumpster diving for once fired AA or STS 28 gauge? Not at my club. They don't bounce twice when they hit the ground. ;)

Challenger hulls are made by Cheddite. They can be reloaded and there are recipies for them from the major powder companies. The Cheddite hulls are a little longer than the AAHS or STS and don't usually crimp as nicely but they definitely can be reloaded.

Pick up some scent from your local hunting shop, apply it to his/her favorite toy and just play (makes them crave the scent and will actively search it out). The great thing about this breed is that they naturally point and love to hunt.

Good luck with your pup

Agreed 28ga AA's or STS's once fired hulls don't usually hit the ground. Just a lame attempt at humor... How many times can you reload the Challenger/Cheddite hulls & using what wad. Since basement flooded this Spring books & equipment are still packed away.

I've reloaded them with Federal wads and the hulls lasted two or three loadings. Using the Federal wads resulted in either dished crimps or a lot of air space in the hull. Others have used wads from Gualandi that are designed for the Cheddite cases but I haven't seen them available in Canada. I suppose they could be ordered through Ballistics Products but I'm happy with the results I'm getting from the Wincheser AAHS hulls (once I sorted out the different lengths issue.)

Kent also uses Cheddite wads and those you may find on the ground at the local club.

I think I am going to order a case of the Remington Premier STS loaded ammo and shoot those off and collect the hulls for reloading. Might be the best way to go. Thanks for all the replies so far!:dancingbanana:

If your going to use a progressive press, do yourself a favour: Find a receipt for those once fired STS hulls that your shotgun likes to pattern & stick with it. Not to insult your intellegence if you are a reloader but my MEC is a pain in the azz to set up & once I get it running smoothly I hate to mess with it.

No insult taken if none was intended! I am new to reloading shotshells, I have loaded about 100 rounds of 12 guage on a Lee Load All. This went very well and I have since also aquired a 700 Versa MEC for 12 guage and I plan to purchase the 28 guage conversion kit for it. What exactly is the pia aspect of your MEC?

The powder drop & primer feed are a piece of cake, but getting proper wad depth & shot drop can be finicky & getting a proper crimp through to finish crimp can sometimes be down right rude... Maybe just me but I've never found a fast way of switching between gauges or sometimes hulls in the same gauge with a MEC loader. I guess thats why I have three progressive loaders in 12, 20 & 28 gauge. Bought them all used probably for the price of one & one half the price of a new one.

Well the 700 Versa MEC is a single stage press, so I will likely set it up for 28 guage and leave it that way. I will then use the Lee Load All for 12 guage. Hopefully I can get them both running smoothly and get some quality loads out of them. :dancingbanana:

I have been telling myself for years " I don't need a damn
28g" ,one more shot gun gauge I don't have time to load,

You guys are making this difficult.

28ga

I got on to the 28ga band wagon, and had to have one..great grouse gun. Well, I got a Rem 1100 Sporting for 980.00 I think, It was a beautiful shot gun, 25 in barrels, tubed and very fancy wood. In fact too fancy for what I wanted, and I like nice wood. So I let it go, and settled on a Charles Daly 28 semi. Synthetic furnature...shoots great, cant hurt it, swings nice, and all for just over 500.00. Its tubed also..One of my fav's

Try a 28 ga. on the skeet field. Excellent choice. 3/4 ounce load of #8's flying at 1200 fps with zero felt recoil after 4 rounds back to back. Its a great compliment to a 12 ga. I presently only own 2 shotguns, one in 12 the other in 28. No need for a 20 or a 410 with these two.:D

And for a real eye opener try the 28 gauge at sporting clays. Those little shells will reach out.

X2. I shoot only 28 and 12 gauge.

Years ago before I moved out West I convinced a skeet shooting buddy at Galt who was a regular trick shooter with his 28 ga Ruger to come out and shoot a round of sporting clays. This guy's shooting a 28 ga. against the rest of us with 12 guages. A lot of long faces when he was finished to say the least...
