Ok. so I'm kinda retired, so that's what they tell me anyways. I work the gas fields here in Alberta, But on my off day's I'm a cowboy, or at least a wannabee. So my friend and neighbour has me check the grazzing lease for fences and just general cattle health. I rode my trust pony "JOE JOE" into K country, and we stumbled onto this. My trusty mount never froze or spooked, just rode on in. I was packing my .444 Marlin and felt quite at ease, I rode to 50 yds of these ol' boys (or girls) but never felt threathened. They fseemed to feel just as peaceful as I did. Sorry about the bluriness of the pic, but that was taken with my cell phone. Enjoy. :)

Oh, and by the way. The reason for me to post this is because I've had countless Griz encounters in my life and times. I spend more time in the bush then more could imagine, still do and will do so 'till I die. Yet I've never felt threatened, endangered or whatever. I just feel that giving them a healthy respect and the room that they need to roam in will preserve these absolutely majestic creatures. There are so many people posting theads concerning bear protection, that I feel it should be known that the best bear protection doesn't concern calibers or firearms.....just bear smarts. My two bits.

what? you didn't shoot it because it made your dog bark? then let it walk off for a mile, get some friends to track it and finish it off, skin it and take the hide home?

that is an awesome picture by the way...

what your saying is true, but no 2 animals are alike just
like humans. u will surprise a sow with cubs or a crochety
old boar one day and your last words will be OH ####.
it seems like every year u see on the news where some rancher or hiker gets mauled , some die and some survive.
best of luck to u

Heck, only a couple hundred more to go and you'll have seen the entire Alberta grizz population!;)

Well, I don't know of a rancher that's been killed by a griz. But I do know one that's been killed by his own cow, just two months ago. I do believe however that griz kills do draw a lot of attentions compared to those killed by drunk drivers.

Not shooting makes you someone that has common sense, and is not trigger happy.:)

gitrdun, I am glad to see you getting the bit about going to be chewed up some day.
Usually it is me that has to take that, "you'll be sorry some day," stuff!

Hahhhhh, if I was to report back on every thing that happened out on the range, I'd write a ####ing book. Got better things to do buddy....like live and ride.:)

Agreed !

I live in black bear country (I know it doesn't really compare) and had some good size males come in close. First thought is to blast them, but you can't kill every critter you see in the forest just because it might pose a threat. If that was the case you'd have to kill them all.

If you got some yardage between you and the animal you can watch them to what they are doing (while you move away), just keep your firearm ready just in case.:shotgun:
