I want to buy an SKS.

okay, so with the low cost of SKS' and the low cost of their ammunition, I'm thinking I'll get one to plink with. maybe even varmint with (too darn cheap not to!). but I have a couple questions...

what SKS is most preferable? Russian? Yugo? Chinese? Other?

how far out do they go accurately?

thanks!

I would go with the Norinco actually. My friend is amazing with his using the iron sights! I really like shooting it too when I get the chance. It pays to get an aftermarket stock with a pistol grip for it IMO... well worth it. My friend can hit anything up to 100 yards easily with his. I actually set up a stake in the ground once at about 60 or 70 yards and he was hitting it easily (it was only 1.5 inches in width too!). Very impressive accuracy for such a cheap rifle.

Unless there's anything aftermarket on the rifle, then the price doubles.
Personally I want a norc one to plink and abuse and a russian or yugo one to plink and admire.

Beware, some people seem to think a stock "New in Box" Norinco SKS is worth $500 and over. They go for around $175 new depending on where you get them. Like the other guys said, check the EE, also look at frontier, they have some coming in September for $229 shipped. Just check all the sponsor sites at the top of the page

Good luck!

the one's coming into Frontier aren't Norinco unfortunately...they're Russian. lacking the experience of knowing what's what yet...would these be 'new' or would these be milsurp?

and must in case someone can answer for me...what's causes the two model's, M14S & M305 for the Norinco rifle? is there some minor difference somewhere or what?

Milsurps I guess. Still better quality then the Norcs. Probably factory refurbs, so 'like new' I suppose. People wanting quality go with a russian or a yugo. People looking for a fun beater rifle are fine with the norcs. Both will work, it's all personal preference.

Norinco M-14S (aka. 'M-305'), that's from marstar's website, so I don't think there is a difference.

I saw a comparison not too long ago (I think someone posted the link on here...) where a guy took a Yugo, Russian and Norinco SKS to the range with the same ammo and compared results. Surprsingly the Norc destroyed the other two when it came to accuracy, even though everyone and their dog swears the Yugo is the best one. I honestly think it's just gun snobbery at its finest to pass up on the chinese ones.
Wish I could find that link again...

I'm too poor to be a snob, which is why I'll probably buy small and work my way up with experience. LOL!

I've met a guy who outshot a competitor and his $1500 Ruger with his $400 Savage.

so snobbery isn't always in the right...

With regards to SKS accuracy for varminting, I can only speak to the performance of the one I tried, which was Chinese, but I dunno if it was Norc or other production.

Consistently, with two different brands of ammo, it grouped about 8" at 50M.

For comparison sake, my Rem870 SHOTGUN with smoothbore barrel puts cheapo Winchester slugs into about 2.5" at 50M.

I would NOT rely on an SKS for varminting.

YMMV.

If you use corrosive ammo and don't clean PROPERLY right after you shoot, your SKS will shoot groups like that. Everyone I know who has one (at least 4 people) can hit anything they want at 80 yards or less with theirs and the cheap communist ammo everyone uses. They all clean their guns thoroughly after shooting though. We've never checked what grouping they get at 50 yards though in all honesty.

Get an SKS-D, they are more expensive but are well worth the difference, you can do so much more with them;)

I've got two norcs and they're exellent. I think snobbery is to blame for a lot of judgements on chinese gear. Metal finishing isn't great but no-one should expect a ferrari for ford money. Put up your hand if you've owned a domestic car or truck that was a pos... Hey look, everyone's got their hand up.

I don't think anyone can really say which SKS; Yugo, Russian, Chinese or otherwise has inherently better accuracy due to its country of origin. They were all manufactured over a long stretch of time and there are bound to be lapses in quality control. Besides, the Chinese made the SKS in about 10 or more different factories.

how much are you flinching before you pull the trigger

I have had many SKS rifles, most have been shooters but there has been a couple that were terrible. The worst one was a Chinese pressed and pinned that patterned around 14" at 100 meters, had to use a roll of kraft paper as a target. The other one I brought to the range with it shot 4" at 100 meters (pressed and pinned barrel as well), both using Silverbox Nork ammo. Some SKS rifles are just built ####ty...

Although I have relaxed a bit over the years, I bet you could still safely eat with any of my firearms, they are clean enough.

No longer clean enough to do surgery with, like my standards of old, but still relatively spotless.

And I have a reasonable history with corrosive, too. That is why Enfields used to come issued with cleaning funnels for the kettle!
