I am in the market for my first rimfire. 223 is getting too expensive. Here is my criteria i want something with a wood stock, i would perfer if it had iron sites, i want a detachable mag, i dont want stainless just blued, i would like to have the option to upgrade it in the future, and it must feed flawlessly and shoot good. I am thinking my budget is ~300 tax in. what does everyone recomend?

I have a 10/22 and it will eat any kind of .22lr you feed it... it's a great, accurate rifle. I highly recommend it.

TOZ 78 or BRNO/CZ. Both really nice weapons and there are some available for that price range almost anywhere.
Cheers,
Grant

Or, get a 10/22 and eventually dress it up as a .223. ;)

Like Cyclone said dress it up as a 223

It's slightly more than $300 but comes with a heavy barrel and laminate stock, no real reason to upgrade it.

Upgrading a 10/22 isn't all what it's cracked up to be.

Edited: Oh yea I forgot you wanted a semi...never mind waht I said.

I was thinking at getting one of them but then i decided i want a semi. If i was going to get a bolt that would be the one i would get.

I was worried about getting a 10/22 because of all the complaints about feeding issues and accuracy but ill probally end up with one or that savage. if i got a 10/22 i would have to have a high cap mag which one is the most reliable?

well i still think it is worth a mention. bone stock this rifle is very good in my opinion. eats all ammo, has the accutrigger, wood stock, bull barrel, and is bolt action.

if you want to consider bolt action then this one is the one for you, hands down.

i know i love mine.

also, you might want to visit rimfirecentral. com

There are plenty of far more interesting and capable used auto loading 22 rimfires out there to hunt and find... go to a show or two, and pick up a few. You will be surprised on what you find.
