Sorry if this has been posted befor, i did a quick scan threw and didnt really come by any thing i was looking for..
Ive always loved the ak-47 design, and would love to one day Maybe add one to my collection.. but im wondering if there is even any that are restriced? or even non-restriced?, mostly just to have one in my collection would be nice, target shooting could probably get expensive but i would still like to have one if possible. :D

Valmet Hunter or the Valmet M78. They are the only AK variants permitted in Canada, and they are non-restricted. If you manage to find one, be prepared to pay a lot.

EDIT: There is a Valmet M78 for sale on the Equipment Exchange.

Yeah, i have one. The M78, as a non-restricted rifle, is really a RPK version in either 7.62 NATO or 7.62x39.

There are "hunting rifle" versions also, which loot much less "ak-ish" in .223, .308, 7.62x39, .30-06 and .243 - possibly some other calibers? They have hunting stocks, no pistol grip, etc. Some people have had luck building these into Galil clones by changing the furniture, adding a pistol grip, etc.

Here's a snapshot of my M78:

get ready to pay around $4000 for a basic one, no accessories. Things like original scope-mounts and rings cost in the $500 range, mags are $200 each or so... not an inexpensive way to play with the AK crowd.

It's not impossible, just expensive.

You can always get a cz858 and tell less knowledgeable friends it's an AK.

Ha ha :D
good plan :p.. the valmet looks nice, replacing the stock with one custom build or if possible one for a ak-47 or clone rifle would make it look even more impressive.. but the cost is way to high.. Maybe one of my long lost-close relatives will decide to "grandfather" me a prohib. so i can get a prohib lisence :)
If only...

Never mind the M78, tell us about the M49 !

???

Why would I put an AK-47 carbine stock on an RPK?

And for the record, most people want to make their combloc AK's more like a Valmet, not the other way around???

(unless it's a Valmet hunter...)

But yes, combloc AK furniture can be fitted... though I have no idea why you would want to do so. Turn a $4000 Finnish RPK into a $400 combloc ak? Ahhh... no thanks.

Shhhhh!

The first rule of M49 club is that we don't TALK about M49 club!!! :slap:

I wish I had a better story to tell about it! M49's are prohib. This one is matching and in nice shape, but sadly dewatted. It does #### and click though.

yes, that is a safe bet. The 7.62x38 versions are actuaklly AKM's with stamped receivers in the RPK configuration. They are much less common, and therefore a bit more expensive... but on the bright side, mags for them are easier to find and less money.

Why would you say that they are "AKM's with stamped receivers in the RPK configuration" as opposed to "RPK's with stamped receivers" ? I have M78's in both .308 and 7.62x39, and there is nothing in the 7.62x39 that makes it more "AKM".
There are M78's in .308 with stamped receievers also, and there is virtually no difference between those and the M78's in 7.62x39. (except the caliber obviously).

About a year ago there was an M78 in 7.62x39 on EE, and it sold for $6500 very quickly.
Now that U.S. State department will no longer approve export permits for these guns, i would expect prices to go up.
