Shooting hollow point ammo under 40 gr

Went out shooting this evening for over an hour and discovered that my .22 prefers shooting bullets under 40grs and in hollow point. I used ammo in 33gr and 37gr and found it was more accurate out to 90 yards when compared to the 40gr. I then compared the two different 40gr ammo I had and found that the 40 grain hollow points worked better then the round nose in shooting accuracy and in cycling the action. I have an Ithaca 72 Saddle Gun (lever action). Using the 37gr ammo I grouped 15 rounds in 2 inches at 25 yards (personal best to date) I've still yet to attach a scope so all shooting is open sights and starting to prefer it as I seem better iron sights then scoped with my .308

Has anyone else noticed that their .22 seems to work better shooting lighter hollow point bullets over the standard 40gr round nose rounds.

At first blush, I'd say it would largely depend on the action of the .22 in question; I've yet to hear of a semi that fed hollowpoints better than solids.

Strange question indeed.
I wonder if there are other factors at work here?

Such as quality of manufacturing.....primer compound/crimp/consitant powder charge/bullet material, etc?

I ask this because there are so many choises in 22 LR available.

PS: The most accurate ammo I have ever used were Eley Match, and Lapua Standard Club.
Neither are hollowpoints.
However right behind these were Remington sub-soinc hollowpoints....

My CZ452 bolt action shoots the 38gr American Eagle hollow points better than the 40 grain AE's and better than any other 40 gr ammo I've tried, including so called target ammo from Remington and Winchester. It works very well in my Lakefield heavy barrel target rifle as well. What doesn't group well I mostly attribute to myself, not that ammo.

I found that the hollow point ammo will not cycle well in my Cooey 64s. the round points work wonderful. I do not attribute this to the weight but rather the smooth surface of the bullet. They slide much easier into the chamber. The hollow point works very nice in the mag fed bolt actions that we shoot...a stevens 300 and a Lakefield Mark 11. The cooey 60 tube fed likes the round points also and fusses when hollow points are used. I was out this past week shooting critters and went thru almost 5 bricks of different manufacturers ammo The more expensive issues did not work any better than the cheaper. Maybe for target ammo the tighter manufacturing regs. help make tighter 25 yard shots but out to 100- 150 yards at tiny targets, they did not do any better than the $13.00 per brick Walmart procurred ammo. the slight weight difference in bullets did not really affect performance to any big degree. One certain brand I will not purchase again as had way too many DNFs.

My 10/22 for feeding will eat the 36gr(or is it 38gr?) mini-mag HPs like candy, as well as the 40gr subsonics by cci.
I'm sorry but my cooey 64 also enjoys the mini-mag and sub-sonic HPs as well.

My .22s just love CCI for some reason.
I don't usually shoot RN rounds unless it's a brick of the cheap stuff from wally or crappy tire. They always do worse.

All .22's, be they rifles or pistols, require trying a box of as many brands of ammo to find the ammo your firearm shoots best and in the cases of a semi-auto, cycles the action too. The price of said ammo means nothing.
"...will not cycle well in my Cooey 64s..." Never been an issue in mine. Everything feeds with no fuss.

That AE22 is awesome shooting ammo in my far from stock 10/22 and Sako quad. I really like that stuff.

My 22's (CZ 511 and 452) love the CCI ammo as well (and I never have to worry about ftf's).

my rifle seems to like 40g solids more, but not much more and so i just buy the 38g ae22s because they shoot pretty decent AND work decent on gophers. maybe not powerpoint good, but pretty good none the less.

I wish we had some bulk packs of under 40 grain for anything other then yellow jackets and other varmint/hunting .22 rounds. WSS shows some .22s on their web site but when you go up they don't have/carry it. Their .22 selection is heavy on WSX of various types but no bulk packs of what my gun likes shooting and Remington hunting rounds. CCI they have a poor selection and the federal shelf is always half empty.

On a side note I did find out that the 40 grain round and hollow points shoot more accurate from a warm barrel then a cold barrel. So I feed the 37 or 33 grain first then a load of 40 grain. This may sound funny but the groupings I get when I shoot this way are 2"-3" groups at 25 yards depends on if I get a wondering bullet ;)

took out some blazer ammo today and found out that at 25 yards dead on and at 50 yards its useless as it hits everywhere but what I'm shooting at couldn't even hit a balloon that was about 8" wide.
