I am kinda looking for a cheaper entry level shotgun for sharps & grouse what would be the best gauge to go with.I used my uncle 16 guage in the past but think I should get my own shotgun now.

for a new entry-level pump its hard to beat the Mossberg Field model in 20ga ($250), or buy one of the Mossberg combos and sell off the extra barrel for a super cheap, new, reliable beater.

but personally i would just look for a used SxS in good condition, they are so much nicer to carry around.

What's your Uncle's Sixteen Gauge like?

Sharptails ARE grouse. If you mean you want to hunt both sharptail grouse and ruffed grouse, they are two VERY different birds. If you don't have a pointing dog, Sharptails are normally hunted with a 12 ga. and full or modified choke, and use #6 shot or even 5's especially in the late season. They are open country birds, and most shots are 35-45 yards. Young of the year can provide closer shots.
Ruffed grouse are close-cover birds, are smaller than sharptials, and most wingshooters ( as opposed to shooting them while they sit) would choose an open choked 20 ga with 7-1/2 shot. Shots are mostly under 30 yards. Target loads are adequate for them.
For your purposes, a gun with interchangeable chokes is most versatile, with a medium barrel length, 26" or 28" and can be 12/16/20 ga. Action type and gun fit are a personal thing.

I hunt grouse with a .22. .12 guage just seems unfair. Plus, the meat is adversely affected. I stalk them, and if they get to flight, I consider it fair chase.

I just picked up a new Stevens 512 Goldwing in 28 guage. It is a well built gun with very reasonable fit and finish for the money. It is also available in 12, 20, and 410. Actually there is a 20 for sale right now in the exchange forum, I might pick it up myself for a second gun as my wife has taken a shining to my new 28!

16's are great. The ammo is a touch more expensive and newer guns in that gauge can be harder to find. But I agree with the previous post recommending the Mossberg field model. The combo with 2 barrels and interchangeable chokes is a great value. I'd be happy with one in 12 or 20 as it could double as a waterfowl gun down the road.

What's your budget?

I just bought a Cooey 840 single shot 16 ga off the EE forum. Idea rifle for all manner if ditch chicken.
