Marine Shotguns: What are they for?

get an 870MM, the Mossburg finish is cheesy at best. My boss has one. With that said they are a great gun to lock in the closet for home defense as if you don't clean it for years or whatnot, it will not rust.

if youre using them around the coast or on a boat in sal####er i can certainly see the need for them. sal####er, salt marshes, etc really do a number on blued metal. i have yet to expose a gun to such an environment but ive seen what they do to even poor-quality stainless steel in a short time.

there are other uses for shotguns in boats too - launching flares, line-launchers, etc. hell if i slept on an expensive boat in a strange port i wouldnt mind having a shotgun in the cabin either :)

we need a pirate defense thread.

Anyone who has need of a shotgun in coastal or high humidity environments would be well served with a stainless or nickel-plated model, as a corrosion resistant finish is easier to care for in those environments. I'm not a great fan of pistol grip shotguns, as they do not make the guns that much more portable, but they do make them much more challenging to shoot well. Barrel length neither dictates nor limits the usefulness of the piece. Short barrels tend to make the guns handier to carry and quicker to bring to bear and have little effect on velocity. Rifle sights may limit the gun's usefulness for pass shooting, but for most other shotgun chores they can be considered an advantage, particularly the ghost ring and post arrangements. If an individual was to limit himself to a single firearm, a 12 gauge pump Marine model with an 18"-20" barrel equipped with rifle sights, a selection of threaded chokes, and a sling and swivels would handle most shooting chores not requiring the long range capacity of a rifle.

Right on the money..

why arent there any stainless pumps?

ive asked this before but noone has been able to give me a straight answer :)
is the electroless nickel plating better at corrosion resistance than stainless? what if it chips/scratches/wears off? stainless is solid stainless, not a coating.

is there something about shotgun pressures/thin barrels that makes stainless steel not ideal for a barrel material? youd have thought there would be dozens of different stainless/synthetic pumps out there by now seeing how they have taken over the mainstream rifle market.

Cost to much to machine the SS.
if a new rem 870 marine magnum is $650+tac with nickle plated and some SS parts, then a 100% SS 870 would be $1000.
Having said that i would buy one even at that price.

Please indulge a newbie question. I have seen these stainless shotguns for sale, often with only a pistol grip. What is their main purpose, and why a shotgun as opposed to another type of gun? Pirate/shark defence? Fishing?

So you won't regret buying a Norinco 870, taking it camping and waking up the next morning with your 12 ga. covered in rust! Anyone want to trade me an old jockstrap for my Norc? :slap:
