What's a good rugged scope base for a Marlin 336?

A Weaver base, then medium high rings, if that is what you need. Sounds like you know you have a poor scope for a 30-30 Marlin. It will make your rifle look, and feel so clumsy, that I wouldn't even dream of putting it on. If it were me, I would put a Williams, Lyman or Redfield aperature sight on it. A peep sight and good front sight is far superior for a 30-30 hunting rifle than the big scope you have.

yeah but it's a windage adjustable rear base w/ front dovetail..not as solid as a Dual dovetail setup or the talleys. They do make the QR base/rings but they're $$$

The peep is lighter and handier, but the scope will allow you to sight more accurately in low light, and will better allow you to see any branches between you and the target. Each has it's advantages.

Well the williams is right out as their model requires you to use the '2 scope mounting holes and install a hammer extension' Redfields website does not work, I guess that means they are not open for business, leaving the Lyman which sounds pretty good, can you order metallic gunsights from the states' regardless of cost and not have to piss around with IICs et al?

-I don't have any plans to actively deer hunt any time soon so she will mainly see use at the range, but never say never as they say. . .

I've got a Williams peep sight and I didn't need a hammer extention. If you get a Williams you will need a taller front sight as the Williams sits high.

The set I ordered came with a fiber optic front sight. It didn't fit the dovetail on my barrel. I did a bubba job trying to put it on (I suck with tools - no patience) so I'm back to looking at scopes.

What about the XS sight system?

I've got the weaver base. Was like 7 and change from WS I think. It's aluminum and I have a phobia with that material, I prefer steel. I'm still going to try it this Fall with some Burris Signature rings and a 2-7x33.

I should have said: "weaver style" I guess - and I was wondering, if you are going to be bush bashing with a lever, and expecting to have to make quick snap shots at game, what advantage a receiver peep sight would have over open sights? one less focal plane I guess. . .

A peep sight with a large aperature is the ultimate of speed with accuracy, when that whitetail buck explodes out of the bush ahead, or sideways, to you. As fast as the rifle comes to your shoulder, the eye is looking through the aperature, and automatically centering the peep. Put the front sight on target and bang.
Open iron sights take that extra bit of concentration, to bring the front sight down into the rear notch. This is why so many misses with open sights go high.

On my Marlin 444S I've mounted a Bushnell Scope Chief VI, 1.5x4.5 and on my Marlin 1895GS I use a Leupold Vari-X II, 1x4. On both rifles I've used Weaver Pivot mounts which allows quick access to the open sights, if required.

You can't legally order firearms components from the USA without the proper export permits. That would include gun sights.

result of my inquiry to Lyman the other day:
Hi,

We would check with the authorities about that. We are not aware of sights being unlawful to ship across the border. We do have dealers in Canada which you can find on our homepage in the dealer directory.

Then why don't the high speed pistol competitors use peep sights instead of dot or holographic sights of some sort?

They themselves are advising you to check with the authorities, since they obviously aren't sure of the law.Apparently, there is an exemption for some gun parts valued at less than $100,so there may be a way to get around the permit if the sights cost less than $100,as long as they aren't considered shotgun parts

Hey Tony, I think that I still have a Tasco one piece base to fit the 336. I bought it here on the EE forum and they are very heavy and durable but ohhh sooo ugly. You can have it if you want, just pay shipping. I ended up with the aluminum Weaver, much nicer and just as good IMHO. I tried XS sights, didn't work for me, so I got low power scopes on both the turdy turdy and the triple four. :)

Because the aperature has to be close to the eye, the closer the better.
For this reason aperature sights are completely unsuitable for use on a handgun.
