Dont strippers use polls?

One need not look any further than the back water hardware store in Dumbluck anywhere to know what is popular for hunting calibers.

270Win, 30/30, 308win, 30'06, 300win Mag, 303 Brit.

Being that 30/30 is missing from the poll, me thinks the results just might be skewed.

BTW: I did not vote

All I can say is I'm surprised that it is that close. I figured the 308 - 30/06 duo for 65 0r 70 percent of the take.

It might be interesting to know which chamberings are most commonly being purchased for hunting today .Of the new rifles that have been recently purchased by people that I know, there hasn't been nearly a high percentage of 308win,or 30-06 rifles, and I don't know of anyone that has purchased a new 30-30 in the last several years. When you look at the older rifles however, there is a much higher percentage of 30-30s,308win,and 30-06s.

id be willing to wager that for every gun-nut that posts in here, there are 5 hunters out there in Canada who dont even know this place exists: they just go out and buy one hunting rifle (and one shotgun), and put at most half a box of ammo through it a year, and use that one gun for decades.
i bet the bulk of those are .30-06s... probably Remmy 700 CDLs topped with Bushnells :D

a lot of the guys i know that are really into hunting are not into guns at all, they just look at them as i would look at a screwdriver or pipe wrench - as just a tool.

i think a poll asking people who have bought their first gun in the last 10-15 years what it was chambered in, and what price range scope they put on it would be interesting.

It would also be interesting to know just how they chose that first gun and scope. The most common reasons for choosing a first gun that I have heard are,

1)My father/uncle/grandfather/friend has the same gun.

2)I liked the looks of it.They had no idea that they could have had an identical looking rifle in another chambering.

3)It was on sale.

Good points by all. My stable of rifles has really increased this last year, but I have a feeling that the .30-06 Remington 700 BDL DM will get the most time in the field. Why? Comfort I guess. I started carrying my dad's (now mine) 1957 Win 94 in .30-30 when I was a pre-teen, and changed up to a Midland .30-06 when I was 13 or 14. It is what I know. I know the trajectory off by heart and I know that whatever I point it at is going to die. Good enough for me. I am a little hesitant on using the .375 on deer, don't know why. Just seems like a lot of rifle for knocking over a Mulie. All of us could get by with a single shot .22lr, a 20 or 12 guage shotgun and a .30-06. But that is not the point. That is why we are all nutz.

Think of it as a 38/55 on steriods.

The only reason I wouldn't carry my 375 for deer is that it's about 1.5lbs heavier than my 257Roberts, even then I'll prolly take it out a few times after moose season.

.

No surprises here but funny there aren't more 45/70 shooters. I remember a few topics back that some guys felt that 99% of the shooters in the field had one....:D

Still choked there's no 7mm STW categoy........

Guessing all the .338 Fed shooters skewed the results with the 06 and 308 as it falls right in the middle!

I'll be using a .300WM, pretty much everyone around here uses a .30-06 except for one .270. Who knows what the heck the lodge hunters will show up with for moose this year.

I will use my 45/70 once again, no matter what I hunt this year. I thought of trying out my .280 but them little boolits don't look too intimidating :)

ManbearPig has good point though, about all the hunters in Canada with one rifle and shotgun. I know a couple guys who buy a box of shells every couple years or so, and actually brag about the fact as if they are so good they don't need to shoot in the off season. :)

You'd be surprised at how many guys pull their guns out for deer season and don't even sight them in. I've heard to many guys over the years say" it's right on", or take a sahot at a popcan at 25 yds. and profess "we're good to go".

The poll asked for the most popular, not what the greatest thing since sliced bread was.

I'm surprised at the results of the .303 British. The poll asked what is the most popular Canadian cartridge. Have the tides turned? Are there really more people using a .30-06 now than the old .303? I'll still bet here the two are probably pretty close in useage. Even though the poll results say otherwise.

That is for a different poll called "What cartridge is used to compensate for your lack of Manhood?":D

Of course I am shooting a 300 WSM in a 7lb package so I'll just walk away now.

And what's your point? I drive a jacked up 4x4 and a sport bike too!!!:D;):dancingbanana:

That's a loaded question TB, forgive the pun. Just about everything you list as an option makes a fine deer cartridge and it also depends on whether you're question defines the best cartridge as chosen by the masses or that cartridge chosen as a personal choice. Heck, the .375 H&H is a great cartridge if loaded down to "reduced loads", the .444 Marlin is most awesome in thick cover, the .270WSM and 7mag are great in the long distance class. But for my choice this year as I aim to put on nice WT buck on the wall will be my .444 as I plan to hunt a thick bush area in the Slave Lake or Rimbey country. :)
