I have a couple of "Mountain Rifles" in the safe...

A-Bolt Classic Hunter in 300 WSM

Bites at both ends. This rifle is also so accurate it is scary! Below is a typical 300 yard 3 shot group using 165 grain Accubonds.

7 1/2 pounds scoped
It too catches your attention, especially when launching a 225 grain Hornady SP @ 2750 fps.

My mountain rifle is no lightweight,but it gets the job done..It is a 7mmstw built on a trued and lapped 700 stainless action,with a fluted kreiger barrel.It wears a 3x10x42 swarovski scope,and tips the scales at about 9 lbs.

When I had it it shot well, but not that well. what kind of velocity are you getting from the 165gr Accubonds?

I'm not sure what that is... is it something you get when you have an Alberta mtn goat tag in your pocket? If it is, then yup, I was being coy.

what kind of velocity are you getting from the 165gr Accubonds?

A tad over 3000 fps. I look at it as a fast 30-06.

That 1/3 MOA 300 yard group was exceptional but not overly surprising as this rifle will cut one ragged hole at 100 yards consistently. The loads are assembled in neck-sized cases that are totally prepped with turned necks, uniformed primer pockets and de-burred flash holes. I run all the loaded rounds over the comparator and those with more than .003" bullet run-out get used for off-hand practise while the "good" ones get used for sighting in and hunting.


This little gem has become my "go-to" rifle.

Since I got it from you I have taken 4 mule deer, one whitetail, a black bear and 2 cougar with it, all with the 165 Accubonds. It fits me perfectly and I had my gunsmith take the trigger down to 2 1/4 pounds and had him re-bed it at the same time.

I changed the scope mounts to extra low dual dovetails and hogged excess wood out the forearm and butt - an idea I copied from my BSA Featherweight - which shaved close to 1/3 of pound off the rig.

As long as it is light and shoots well you are set. Mountains have a way of making even a light gun heavy.

I had a 340Wby built for sheep hunting, haven't used it, then bought a 300wsm in SS but not taking it now. instead I'm going back to the basics and using the good old time tested 7mmRem Mag in the good old Ruger M77RS
topped with Leupold's Vari-X II 4-12X40mmAO.
It's not the lightest rig, but does the job effortlessly every time.

Ohh man, I love that rifle, nice choice of cartridge too. Some day I'll do a build some thing like that, OK, almost exactly like that. I do think it deserves Leupold flip ups, instead of the BCs though, Chuck.

Of the factory rifles, those Kimber Montanas ain't bad. Wish they would do them with bottom metal and the bolt on the other side.............
