best 338 win mag ammo for cariboo

It's my understanding that caribou aren't that hard to kill, much like a WT deer. I'd suggest any non-varmint type ammo that will group well in your temp range.

Pretty much anything that goes bang but a Premium ammo from any of the big four should do the job. Something like an accubond, SST, partition, TSX....you name it.

Yup, they'll all do the job just fine. Pick the one that shoots the best but no need to go heavier than 180 if you don't need to for accuracy. You doing one of those winter hunts in Quebec?
 
I'd bet a 200gr SP would work, like the Winchester Powerpoint. However, if I'm paying $$$ to go on a hunt, I'm taking the best bullet I can buy for the job, accuracy included of course.

For my money I'd be using a Hornady IB or Nosler AB. Ammo is not the place to save money.
 
I have killed about 22 caribou over the last 10 years. They are pretty easy to kill. 21 have dropped dead right on the spot, 1 took two shots because of a poor neck shot. The most premium bullet I have used is a speer hot-cor. I have used many different calibers (.243, .30-30, .30-06, .300 win mag, 7mm rem mag, and none did it better than the other) Just make sure the distance you are shooting is within your skill level and you should be golden.
They dropped quite quickly with bullets in weights from 100 grain soft points up to 180 grain federal hot cor's. But if you choose better bullets, make sure they are quick expanders, and not controlled expansion. Caribou aren't any tougher than deer, and not much thicker. Good eatin though

I'd be using el-cheapo, 130gr, bulk barn, Power Points in my 270Win. :slap:

I have shot a few Caribou, and as stated, they are not any harder to put down than is a big deer. Placement, of course, is always important. Caribou can be shot from very close to quite a way out, so make sure you know your trajectory intimately. Enjoy, Eagleye.
 
A .338 will, of course, kill a caribou. If you have the rifle, and want to use it, and if you can shoot it well, fine. But....
It is entirely unnecessary.
 
I'd probably lean towards the 180 gr Accubonds if I could get my hands on some, Federal loads them. Part # P338A3
 
most will be fine for caribou, stay away from the soft bullets as you will lose alot of meat.I used the hornady SST a few weeks back on a mtn caribou, took out the heart and lungs but had alot of bloood shot meat.

Ahh, but the PowerPoints would do the job.:dancingbanana:

You're thinking exactly the way I am and that is, use a good bullet, even if you don't need it. :)
