I just got back from the range today to sight in my .223 Stevens 200 in light of the upcoming 'yote season. Now, I must admit that I have steel epoxy'd bedded this rifle and stiffened the forend and buttstock. But shooting Hornady Interlocks, this cheap, ugly little rifle shot a 1/4" group at 300 yards. My buddy who was there to witness it, asked me to sell his Sako in said same caliber as it can't even come close (3" groups). Now don't get me wrong, this ain't all about puttin' Sako's down, but do you know of anything pound for pound or dollar for dollar that can match? Not likely, them ugly little guns are damned shooters. BTW, I have kept the targets for those who are sheptical. :D
 
There is no gun in the world that shoots 1/4" groups at 300 yards. And if there was one, it would not be Stevens 200, otherwise it was not sold at Cabelas for $299.

i think what he's saying is there's no gun in the world that shoots like that consistently and he's bang on...not saying you didn't fire a 1/4" group at 300 but you couldn't do that again if your life depended on it....i have a stevens 200 in a 25-06 and it will shoot under 1" 3 shots at 100m pretty consistently and for the cash they are a sweet deal!

What if his 1/4" @ 300 group is a one time, but he does many at 3/4"-300?

The best rifle I've owned to date was a Rem 700 mountain rifle with the pencil barrel that was totally stock... no mods at all.

It regularly shot under 1/2" @ 200m... and I'm not really a very good shot compared to a lot of the fellas at my club...

why are you bringing up 3/4" groups? you're guessing...what i'm saying is even if you locked the stevens 200 in a vice and eliminate human error you will not consistently get 1/4" at 300 it has nothing to do with his skill i have no idea how good of a shot he is...it's all about consistency..a one time fluke group of 1/4" means nothing.
 
I remember shooting some 120 gr matchkings in a 260 mtn rifle a number of years ago. 3 shots @ 300 meters was a little over half an inch, couldn't believe it. Groups @ 100m with that load averaged about 1.5"

Stevens 200's are what they are, inexpensive straight shooting rifles
 
@ whatsknew: todbartell's post illustrates that 100, though commonly used, isn't the best range to check accuracy of a rifle. Some bullet/powder combos may not actually stabilize 'till 200 or better...

I only used 3/4" as an analogy to illustrate a 'regular' group 3 times larger than a 'fluke' group. Either way that's damn good shooting at 300..
 
Who the hell are we to question anyone.Is it possible to get that group- YES did he say he shot 10 such groups- NO. Hell I got a group under 1/2 at 200 with my 45-70, but the second shot opeded it up some. AJ
 
Okay, when someone says that his gun shoots such and such groups, I am assuming, and that's my bad, that he means reproducible results.
My method is two 5-shot groups and my Stevens 200 in 223 shoots 5/8"-3/4" groups at 100 yards. What it does at 200? Well, predictably, 1 1/2-2". I don't see how a bullet deviating from the straight line at 100 yards can magically return at 300 - that's pure voodoo from my perspective.
 
blargon haha yeah me too.....and AJ i'm not questioning anyone at all..i'm just saying they (stevens 200) can't do it consistently but yes it is damn good shooting and congrats but i wouldn't go trading in my sako because of one lucky group.
 
I have a Stevens 200 with the factory barrel rechambered to 223 Ackley. It will occasionally shoot a one inch group at the pig rail, 300 meters. Usually the groups are a bit over two inches. It does this with 40 gr Ballistic Tips at 3900 fps all the way to 75 gr Amax at 3000.

I also have one in 7mm-08 that as far as I can remember, has never shot a group larger than an inch and a half, regadless of bullet weight, and the 160 Accubonds are just amazing! :cool:

They are great rifles for the price.
