260 Remington

Becasue they are all inthe same class of cartridges, and I'd pick the 7-08 and .260 over the rest.

"Short" actions never meant much to me, until I started using them.:)

I was just checking out the Cooper web site and noticed that they offer in 6.5x284.

I'm thinkin' based on what you guys claim that this MUST be the KING of the 6.5s It's a short action (good thing), shoots 6.5cal bullets (magical), and lacks the dreaded, now outdated, belted case, not to mention that those Coopers are some beautiful rifles.

I'm serious.

You never answered the question. It has lwer velocity than the 257 w mag?QUOTE=todbartell;2435977]that's the spirit Chappy! :D

it will kill deer sized game just as well out to as far as you can see, providing you can shoot your rifle :sniper:

it's not the cartridge he wants, it's the rifle...his 308 is a tank  :D[/QUOTE]

Yes it has lower velocity than the .257 wby, but its hardly a fair comparison between a Standard short action cartridge and a Magnum long action cartridge.

In the magnum category I'd still take the .264 WM over the .257 Wby.;)

Fixed that for ya. :D:sniper:

Tis a great case for ringing max velocity out of those long 6.5 bullets, 2.800 is a bit of a limiter thougher how long the Cooper action actually is?

when I bought my first 260 in 2003, the plan was to rechamber it to 6.5-284. After shooting it in 260 form for the summer I could not justify doing so. The extra 150 fps just doesn't give it that much of an edge, in these days with laser range finders & elevation turrets. The longer barrel life and easier/cheaper components of the 260 makes it the winner. In fact when I rebarrel my custom 260 next time, I may go to the 6.5x47 Lapua, which seems to get pretty much the same speeds as the 260 Rem but with less powder and better brass

yes, it does have lower velocity. as does the 257 Wby compared to a 257 STW or 25-378 Wby...:onCrack: velocity is not the end-all be-all for hunting cartridges. I've found the faster the cartridge a guy shoots, more often than not, the poorer the shot. Some guys use high velocity as a crutch for their piss poor shooting  I'm not pointing fingers at you though :)

I always thought a 6.5x57 would be a cool cartidge. Something different, but still as effective as the 260 or 6.5x55.

Last year I passed on a set of custom RCBS dies in 6.5x57 for $35 at a gun show. Should have bought them, just cuz.

Even cooler would be the 6.5x63mm. Your .270 is a perfect candidate.:)

You never answered why velocity isnt important. A personal insult may make you feel better about being short of having a short of whatever but answer the question.

velocity is important, but it is not the end all-be all of rifle cartridges like I said, if that was the case, we'd never be able to kill anything with a 45/70 or 30-30. It's ok if you're a big time newb and don't understand ballistics, you will over time if you're open minded and not stuck in your Roy Weatherby mindset. :)

How does the 6.5 Rem mag compare to these calibres? My uncle wants to give me his, but it seems like an unpopular calibre these days. I think the only recent rifle I saw chambered for it was the Rem 673. Would I have to reload?

I think a cool calibre, but definitly for a handloader.

Ive hunted for 35 years. Mostly with 12 guages, 20 guages, 30-06 and .22s. No Im not an internet wannabe. Can you answer the question rather than dispense insults about shooting abilities and Newbs.
