Applying Gas Checks to cast bullets

I always thought that the gas check cap was placed in the bullet form B4 the lead was poured in. I have not personally seen it done ...before or after forming the bullet.
 
most of the time the gas check is installed/applied in the resizer and is lubed at the same time.Been a long time might have to buy special die for the resizer
 
First off the bullet has to be made for the gas check , ie smaller dia than the rest of the bullet at the very end .
You set the copper cup into that area, it may stay or may be a bit loose depending on mix of lead, which determines drop size of bullet in the bucket from the mold.
A lee sizing die is very easy to use, sets up in your loading press, and gives a tight gas check to bullet base every time (very important to have it fit flush with bottom of bullet for accuracy) .
I tap the cup on a bench holding the bullet between my fingers just prior to placing in the die , and running it through (lube the bullet with liquid alox.:sniper:

The same sizing die works in the Lyman sizer-lubricator for either a flat base bullet, or one with a gas check. Diameter of the die is only thing that matters.
The pressure of forcing the bullet through the die sets the gas check squarely onto the bullet and the sizer crimps it firmly on.
 
Best method... grab a can full of bullets and your box of GC's. Watch your favorite show while snapping the GC's onto bullets. When the show is over and your can is full... off to your bullet sizer and they get crimped on as you lube.

Any of the larger supply stores should have them, without checking I would think SIR, Russels, Wholesale Sports, etc.
There will be no distinction between 308 and 311. They are just simple, very light weight copper "cups." The gas checks are usually just called 30 calibre for either.
This is my thought, but lookout if someone doesn't come up with 311 gas checks!!!

I was just sniffing around the Wholesale site. I'm still learning about casting and GC and such, but I'll probably go for it soon.
