only pick one of the two. bear stopper.

or you could shoot a 45/70 with 300 gr Nosler Partition @ 2400 fps? nuf said

so now we have to carry reloads now to pooo :runaway: no factory 45/70 ammo I can find has that kind of speed.....anyway its more the energy I care about when with in 50yds.

45/70 with a winchester 300gr CXP3 nosler partition
1880fps 2355ftlbs

12ga load I listed
2100fps 2937ftlbs

you can go to a 3.5'' 12ga and get 2100fps with around 3728ftlbs

but I'm sure both guns would do equal damage to a bear the 12ga is just more versitile so I would take that over the 45/70 and I already own the 12ga....

Yeah, this is the main reason I go for the 12 guage as your ultimate close range defense firearm. The pump 12 guage is also a bit faster and less prone to being screwed up by someone who is in a state of panic. I have seen guys lock up both of these actions when using them in stressful situations however.

Best bet - a tactical style semi-auto 12 guage with good slugs that are proven in that gun. Fool-proof and massive close range stopping power as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Ah, but what *true* gun nut doesn't already carry hand loads? Besides, there's always the 450 marlin guide gun for the rest

The point is pretty much academic. If you are charged by a bear you will get one shot. At the range you will likely shoot it (or try to) a hit with .410 and #6 shot will be just as effective as anything else you fire at it.

If purely for defensive purposes, 12ga. If there's the possibility of offensive use (hunting), then 45/70.

Great question!

Shotgun, all the way.

I hunt with scoped rifles, simply because I know my limits with sights (even good sights). For this reason, I usually have a shotgun around the campfire, just in case a bruin shows up, it's going to be much much more useful than a scoped rifle.

I want to know what to do if confronted with a situation like this!! Here you've got 2 bears, they both are showing aggresive tendencies. I am amazed the photographer was able to get these pics and not be seriously mauled.

I mean clearly this is life and death right here!!

Make the wrong choice and you're dead...

I bet this pic was taken at the zoo or with a camera lense as long as your arm.

anyhoo, that would be quite the dilemma. I would try to get ot of there as fast and quietly as I could. watch for mom because she wont be very happy.

One of the last bears I shot was with an over/under 12 gauge loaded with buckshot and a slug.
After the shot of 00 buck hit him in the face,I paced it off at 9 paces to his dead body ,I would have rather had a 45-70.:sniper:
