Mounts/Rings for new Remington SPS Varmint?

Hi guys,

I'm assembling a "money-is-an-object" varmint rifle with a new Remington SPS Varmint rifle (in .223) and a scope that I've had sitting around for a couple of years ... a Mueller APV 4.5 - 14 x 40 AO that the guys in the Rimfire forums are still (two years later ... after its intro) really enthused about.

I know it's a cheap scope, but I own it and it's paid for. I also have a Leupold Ultralight 3-9 x 33 EFR on my Anschutz sporter, so I do know / appreciate good glass.

For mounting the scope ... I do have a new set of basic Weaver rings (and no mounts) but I'm thinking that a big/long/heavy rifle with this coolness factor (sorry) deserves something more "appropriate" than the (admiitedly classic and functionally fine) Weavers.

In steel ... without breaking the bank. Any suggestions for a mail-order mount/rings combo? Many thanks!

I went with TPS rings and a Evolution Gun Works Picatinny base.
Allen Gunworks carries the bases, and I think Alberta Tac has the rings.

I have a very similar rig... SPS Varmint in 204 Ruger and Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25X50 and I LOVE it.

For snuffing hay pigs, I went with cheap weaver bases and I had some cheap weaver rings. I think I spent $50 for the whole ring/base thing. You're talking with a guy that has flaunted divorce many times over the endless pit that my gun hobby has created, but I spend the money where it makes a difference.

Don't blow a whole ton on a rig like that. It isn't necessary and won't make it shoot any better.

For the slight difference in price from cheap and a big difference in quality I would suggest Leupold 2 piece bases and Burris Signature rings. Super easy to mount and no lapping required and the best fit to the scope... and no scope tube marks... ever...

Hi guys,

Thanks to you both.

I went to the Allen Gunworks website and checked-out the suggested rail ... a good price at about $50. They mention that it's lower than the standard EGW Picatinny rail but I'm assuming that it'll be no problemo with my APV's 40 mm objective.

Now to research the TPS rings, or maybe just try to remember where I stashed those perfectly-good Weavers ... :)

May I ask how stock are your rifles? I've got terrible eyesight, and plan on leaving mine bone-stock.

Sorry .... just missed that third reply. I was actually also considering that same Burris / Leupold combo as well. Coincidence ...

If you go with a rail have it glass bedded to the action with no stress... and lap the rings...

I appreciate the fact that you took the time to read and respond, but your suggestion is just not "in the cards" now.

Unless it's absolutely necessary, I have no intention of even removing the action from the stock. Sorry, but I don't even have a rifle-specific torque wrench.

Precision shooting is not yet a hobby, just an interest easily-enjoyed because of where I live.

You don't need to remove it from the stock...

I was referring to bedding the rail on the top of the action... a lot of shooters don't realize how poorly one thing fits another...
 
I put an EGW rail ($60ish) and Burris Extreme Tacticle rings($60 for 30mm rings) and a Vortex 6.5-20x44mm scope on my wifes SPS Varmint. for rings and base for this price it was a great deal. The Burris rings are great looking and the 20moa base lets me shoot the real far stuff with her rifle. The rifle shoots excellent and my wife was able to shoot her first sub-moa groups at 100yards this evening.

Where, may I ask, did you find Burris Tactical rings for $60/pr?
