What distance to site in my 22 at?

I think our local rimfire range is 25 yards and 50 yards dont' think 25 and then 100,200 and 300 like our big bore range.
Is this typical?
If I site in my ruger 22 at 25 yards will it be pretty close at 50..is it wrong to expect great accuracy at 100 yards with a 22? I would think ammo can really make a difference as well?
 
You can get very good accuracy at 100 yards with a .22 rimfire. ( say half an inch groups with the right gun & ammo. )

However as you pointed out, the ammo is a part of it. Having a very good accurate rifle with decents sights or a scope & a very good trigger pull helps also.
 
It all depends what you're using the .22 for, I've seen gophers go down at 200 yards with a good .22 and I head shoot lot's of grouse up to 50 yards every year. Go to the 25 yard range with a good selection of ammo, it doesn't have to be expensive, my Brno loves winchester Super X and PMC. and doesn't shoot worth a damn with competition ammo costing $5.00 a box. I sight mine in so it's making a ragged hole at 25 yards and there isn't a grouse that's safe out to 50. As stated in the previous thread a good .22 with good ammo can reach a long way but the majority of my shooting is 50 to 75 yards max.

How far above the line of the bore is the line of your sights? If it is high, the difference between 25 and 50 yard sight settings may be quite different from a rifle with iron sights close the the line of the bore.

If I'm shooting beyond 25 yards, high speed ammo is not a good idea, both because of accuracy and because wind deflection actually increases with high speed.

Tripalm; Just curious, if you know something I don't. Where are you getting competition ammo for $5.00 a box? I need the source.;) :D Regards, Eagleye.
 
I use mine for rabbits and sight it in dead on at 25yds, that leaves me a little low at 50yds....Most bunnies are shot at or just under the 25 yd mark...for me anyway...I guess it all depends on what you want to use it for....
 
25 or 50 is irrelevant, really, difference in POI is about 3/4". Either will work fine. Ruger 1022 at 100 yards is a stretch though. See if you can get them all on paper at 50 first.
 
Also depends on scope/drop for your ammo. With my scope, when I sight in at 50m, then 100m is where reticle changes from thin to thick. May want to see how your scope works and then decide if 50, 75, or 100 offers the most convenience.

This is a great program for helping you to figure out what range to sight in at. I use it any time I am using new ammo to give me an idea of where to start. Currently, the ammo that my Marlin seems to enjoy is the Winchester 333 Pack. I have my rifle sighted in for 20 yards which means that I can hit anything within half an inch right out to 65 yards. With normal hunting ranges for the .22 usually being well under 75 yards, I never have to think about elevation; just center the cross-hair and blaze away! :sniper:

I have mine sited in at 40ish yards. At 120 yards I just aim a little high and get hits every time. This is just for plinking though not anything that really matters as of yet.

Some day I will properly site my scope, just don't have an accurate way of measuring range other than GPS (with 4m accuracy).
 
A POA=POI at 50m will provide you with a 6'Oclock hold at <25m (this is the best IMO for the .22lr)

Forget 100m, you can sight in for 100m and it is accurate... but all your <100m shooting gets tossed out the window.

I don't have data for such a short sighting distance but I'd tell you to sight in
at 50 yds, then try it at 25 yds to see where your point of impact is.

Just a guess but you then may be half an inch high at 25 yds...

For accuracy at 100 yds I aim at 1 inch capacity which is possible with a good
bolt action rifle and ammo it likes. Some semi will do it too. My Browning 22
Auto is rather a .875 inch at 50 yds...

A guess (one more time) a 22 rifle sighted in at 50 yds will have about
3.5 inch of drop at 100 yds.

Not a guess this time: I experienced very different results (drop) with various
ammo, don't know why... So find the ammo which gives you best accuracy
and stay with it!
