OK, Im not a shotgun guy, enfields I know but shotguns.... I need help

I have 2 Win Model 12's now one is an old Police riot gun,the other I just got.

Now thats the one I need to find out about. I was told that it's susposed to be worth something. To me it looks like any other shotgun, what should I be looking for, what would make it special.

Oh I got it for free. :D

It will be choked Cylinder and marked as "CYL" It should have a steel butt plate. These were the two most common features on original factory police models 12. Alot of police departments bought standard 12's and had them shortened to riot specs. On these you will see plastic butt plates and choke markings ranging from IMP CYL to FULL. Other than that the riot models were the same as field models when it comes to parts (short of the barrel) Any unusual model 12 features such as solid/vent ribs, special chokes ie: WS1, factory recoil pads, oddball barrel choking combos such as 28" with a IMP CYL choke in 16 gauge the list goes on and on. Rariety of the combination of features adds to the value but condition is always the most important consideration. Hope this helps.

regards, Darryl

Dont mean to dis Darryl but steel buttplates were an option on riot model 12s but few were ever ordered...the hard rubber/plastic butt plates were standard on all riot guns...
Also important in valuing your model 12s is when they were made...nickel steel guns [pre '31] are popular with collectors, next would be pre WW2...some guys like guns made during the war years [military marked or not]... if you post the serial numbers of your model 12s Im sure we can let you know when they were made....you can X out the last couple numbers if it makes you feel more comfortable [example .. 9886XX]

Not all bird hunting requires steel shot. :)
