I have come across some bricks of Imperial 22 either Target or Match ammo. Have any of you older rimfire shooter remember trying this product? Supposed to be more than 40 years old. thanks FS

The Dominion Ammo company made many brands of ammo in Canada including 22's. For many years supported youth range training and high school cadets, cheaper ammo, targets awards, and yearly inter club matches. Some of the brand names were Imperial, Dominion, Canuck, and Maxum. Great company, too bad they faded away in the American advertising haze and bull#### blitz.

I just finished half a brick of CIL Canuck. 10 -25 shot groups averaged about an inch out of my 40x. Wish I had more! I recall seeing some CIL Bisley at a gunshow recently. My quest is on!

When IVI took over the Imperial brand from CIL the quality sufferred. The only brand that ever failed to fire in my K-22 was IVI target, and I often found rounds with odd creases and dings on them. The CIL product was always good, for me at least.

Ahhh the memories. My dad would give me a buck, send me down to the Canadian Tire Store on my bike, I'd buy a box of .22 shorts, and with the trusty old Stevens Crackshot (which is still in my safe today along with its bigger brother .25 rimfire) I would keep busy (and out of is hair) for the afternoon. Probably 12 or 13 at the time.

Rooted around and found these. The Winchester box says .66 cents.

In the past I used Imperal .22 shells for rabbit hunting with good luck, still do.At gun shows when ever I run across any of these shells I pick them up.Many times they can be had for good prices.

I shot literally thousands of rounds of "Super-Clean", "Whiz-Bang", "Central V", "Bisley" and a couple of other offerings from C.I.L. available in the 50's and 60's. It was generally great quality ammo until Valcartier Industries took over, then it basically went downhill. If you have some of this ammo, it is achieveing some collector value, and might be good to refrain from shooting it. I have a question. Did anyone buy ammo from Xelex, or Ammomart in those years? These companies were former names for Higginson's Powders, and at one time, you could buy 22 Rimfire ammo Thomas brought in from France and a couple of other western European countries at remarkable prices. We shot a lot of that stuff, too. It often came in 100 round square boxes, and had a messy lubricant on it, but it always shot well. Gevelot was marketing their ammo in that period also, and we shot some of that, too. Those were the carefree days!! No PAL, No license, just plinking and knocking off gophers, Starlings etc. Ahhh, the memories! Regards, Eagleye.

As a kid in the late 50's and early 60's, we only ever shot Super Clean or Whiz Bang. We used short, long, and long rifle, whatever we could afford. You were into the big time if you showed up with a box of "mushroom". One Christmas, my parents bought me a whole brick of Super-Clean. My buddy got a brick of Whiz Bang. Man, did we think we were some punkins!! Seems to me the Super-Clean were waxy and Whiz Bangs were dry. Is that right? I have various boxes of this old ammo. I sleep with it under my pillow.:p:p

C I L

just checked them again and they are C I L Imperial Target22 long rifle standard velocity. Doesn't mention a grain weight? Likely 40gr I guess. Plastic shrink wrapped brick. Also included a 3 boxes of Winchester Yellow box Red writing Super X 22 shorts, 1 box of CIL Whiz-Bang high Velocity Long, and the bonus 2 full bricks of Yellow box Red writing Super X 22 short. One other to mention is the C I L Imperial 22 long High velocity.
Nice thing is all of these boxes are still full and are in very good condition, the Whis is a pen marked .75 and there is a sticker on the Plated longs .98 cents.
Was hoping to shoot the 22 shorts in my shorts only Winchester model 74
Are there guys in Canada that collect this sort of thing?
Regards Greg

We always used only the Imperial 22lr and 12ga loads for hunting. Never ever had a FTF or a jam in my Cooey 64. We put thousands of rounds thru our rifles. I was at a HACS show here in Burnaby this am and saw a bench with a bunch of Imperials on it. Brought me way back man. But I use CCI Minimags and Velociters now so I am ok. Back then there was not much choice at Crappy Tire but now there is so much choice you could shoot different ammo all day long and never go into the same brand twice.

c.i.l ammo

if it is wrapped in plastic is it the plastic slide open box or the old paper box? the plastic is the newer crappy stuff. it is not near as good as the old stuff.the ammo (imho) is not worth any more than new ammo but the boxes do have collector value.the old boxes had actual useable info on them not just a bunch of warnings.my dad used to say the old ammo boxes told you a story about what you could do with it.

CIL amo

I strenously object to the term "older" rimfire shooters. We are not "older" just, elder, more insightful, mature, more attuned to life than you "younger" chaps.

Re: Have we tried it? Man! That's all we ever shot in those halcyon days. I still have a box of CIL Pistol Match, a box of CIL Imperial plus a box of Imperial 22LR High VelocityTarget. Am I ever going to shoot these? Don't think so. Where would my mind rest after these are gone?

Back in the good old days, I recall going to pistol shoots at the Coast Marksmen Range, and we were given each a brick of DND amo, courtesy the Canadian Government(that is why I refer to those days as the "good old days", could you imagine such a generous gesture now-a-days?), in plain grey cartons. Greasy amo, I recall, but very accurate for NRA and Free Pistol matches. I believe these were made by CIL as well.
