Good Afternoon Folks:D

Not sure if this should be here or in gunsmithing, so here it goes.

I have a question about the Rem 870 Magnum receivers. The 870 I have is only a 3 inch Magnum barrel. Can I buy a 3 1/2 inch barrel and put on this receiver? Or will the receiver be able to handle this?

Thank you

You dont need 3.5 inch shells or chambers for anything.

It's only a shotgun, good for forty yards at best, and even inside forty, how many shots have you missed? A 3.5 would not have helped you there.

Think about it.

A 3.5 chamber is useless and will cost a fortune to feed.:runaway:

They call me scatter gun, know why?????:p:p

It was a question brought to my attention at a shoot last weekso I figured I would ask.

Thank You all for the information. Have a good night now. :welcome::wave::shotgun::shotgun::shotgun::shotgun:

I believe this is covered in the user manual. The barrels for the 3" and 3.5" models are not interchangeable. Given this, and the fact that 3.5" shells aren't necessary, I just bought the 3" model. More versatility.

this is from the remington web site:

NOTE: Model 870 Extra Barrels with 3" chambers will fit Super Magnum, Magnum, and 2-3/4" receivers. These barrels will handle both 2-3/4" and 3" shells when used on Magnum receivers. Use only 2-3/4" shells when these barrels are used on 2-3/4" receivers.

Many of the new 870 magnums come with super magnum barrels.

Thanks for the correction CNADNSL8.

EDIT: Found this on the 'net. It looks like I was indeed mistaken. Sorry for the misinformation .

Model 870 Super Magnum barrels chambered for 3 1/2" shells cannot be used on non-Super Magnum Model 870 receivers. However, Model 870 magnum barrels with 3-inch chambers can be used on Model 870 Super Magnum receivers, but only with 2 3/4 or 3-inch shells. Super Magnum receivers have serial numbers that end with the letter "A".

So can you adapt a standard 18 inch barrel to a 3 1/2 receiver and then add a magazine extention (7+1) ? That would make a 3 1/2 tactical right? If not, how do you make a 3 1/2 tactical?

Where can I buy a 3 1/2 reciever?

I'm asking this because the vented rib looks old and un-cool.

But there is no point in having a 3-1/2 reciever if the barrel you want only takes 3 inch. I have not seen a 18 inch barrel stamped 3-1/2. The shortest I've seen is 20"

There is a non-vent rib 3-1/2 chamber 870 23" barrel with rem choke on the EE right now.
