I was at a local dealer today and he told me that Magnum Research .17HMR semi-auto's are experiencing a high rate of failure of the extractors. He also said both Remington .17 semi's were having problems as well.

I've had a M-R w/ carbon fiber barrel on order for 3 months now and still waiting. Problems with supply of barrels so they said in a recent email.

Has anyone heard of problems with the .17HMR's in semi auto's? Suggestions? I'm now thinking strongly of cancelling the order while I still can and moving to a bolt action instead.

i think that they would be in the same boat as the 10/22M, they are/were kind of finikey. if you ever looked at catalogues, ruger had advertised the10/17 rifle for quite some time, but it never actually hit production due to feeding problems and reliability issues.

for all intents and purposes you have to ask yourself if you really need a semi-auto 17HMR. you will likely be shooting longer distances, which means a more careful shot. you likely will not need a follow up, and if you do, the time to get on target again wont be adversly affected by an extra second to work the bolt.

if i were you, i would look at rimfire central, i'm quite sure i've seen people that have semi-auto 17HMRs both manufactured, and built from the 10/22M platform.

best of luck!

Thanks to Jahred.F for the info and directions to the Rimfire Central. Went there and found a thread dealing with just this very question. Seems there are only two manufacturers still producing semis in 17HMR, Magnum Research and Volquartson. Anyway, I'll look closer before making a decision.

you are certainly welcome for the info.

i do hate to direct someone away from the host site, but with the wealth of info available at rimfire central, there is really no choice...
