Anyone know how much it costs to have a 30/06 recrowned? Would i be better off just ordering the Recrowning kit from brownells for 150 bucks? Is there a cheaper way to recrown after a cut off? Just want to make sure its smooth counter sunk and straight.

epps charges 75 to cut and crown a rifle bbl (starting more if the bbl needs to be removed from the action) likely less if all it needs is a faceoff and a crown.

I cut it down(I left some extra legal pplaying room, but I am not too convinced of the straigthness of my cut. I don't think its off by all that much. I would think it would just need a facing with that facing tool. I saw how the guy squared his up with an angle iron clamped to the end as a guide and filed it, so I will try that out and see how it goes, then likley I'll do the brass screw thing and shoot a few rounds.

As for the actual crowning part I have seen that your not supposed to go in ver deep, but how deep is deep enough compared to the rifling? Should you lap off enough to go all the way through the rifling? Or should the crowning not penetrate the rifling fully?

If you are using a round lap, the depression you create should be larger in diameter than the bore and rifling.

It really suprises me how people go through so much trouble while professional job is just around the corner. Crowning is easy job for any machinist who has done it before or at least knows what he is doing. Ask friends of yours, friends of friends and so on. There must be a machinist somewhere who would be happy to re-crown your barrel just for the fun of it.

Recrowning

Hi,

I got it done twice so far. The first time it cost me 25$ CAD for an Anschutz .22 and the second time it cost me 40$ CAD for a cooey model 600. My gunsmith only has the 45 degree cutting tool so that's the crown I now got. I believe target shooters want the 11 degree angle but that is another discussion.

Bye.

I charge from nothing to $40 depending on just what I have to do...

Many crowns can be improved greatly by simply using a piloted 60 degree chamfer reamer.

I know this is a bit of an old bump I guess, but I think alot of people go through alot of effort to do it themselves for the fun of it. Cost is liekly the initial motive but doing it yourself is a bit more satisfying in many people eyes.
