ok I think I want to try modding my 10/22,

Can I start with just a stock? or should I do stock + barrel?

the 10/22 I have is about 6 years old, the action is in good condition as far as I can tell, but it is just the plain model.

Not sure if I should mod this one or go buy a new one first and go from there. but then again if the action is fine...

the only issue I have with the 10/22 is now and then it likes to not eject or feed the next bullet properly, can be plinkering away then suddenly you go to press triger and nothing and when I look in the action there are 2 bullets, one of them damaged. will have to investigate this :) am using 2 brand new stock magazines.

A exact edge extractor should fix the problem of not ejecting properly.
You can get them for about 12 bucks.
Check out rimfiresports and Hawktech they ship to Canada and have all sorts of mods for the 10/22.

It could be cheap ammo gumming it up. Give the place where the bullet sits on the bolt a good cleaning, gunk can build up there.

As for modding, there are some free/cheap things you can do like the auto bolt release mod, polishing the internals, stoning the hammer. As for drastic things it would be stuff like new barrel, new stock or a new scope. Also remember that some stocks are meant for the normal barrel size and others are for the bull barrels. When ordering just make sure you match the barrel and stock.

Thanks for the info.

what exactly does: auto bolt release mod do?

am guessing when you press the little button it just releases the bolt instead of having to fiddle with it :)

It's even better!! You just have to pull the bolt handle back to get it to release.

When/if you do the auto bolt release mod (I think there are pics on the tips and tricks thread above). However, make sure that the spring is on the thing or else it won't work properly. I learnt that the hard way but at least the thing still works.

it all depends what style you are after. if you like the bull barrel look, they you should try and buy the stock and barrel at the same time (a bull barrel isn't much good without a stock to fit it, and vice-versa!), otherwise just read up, and make your gun yours. have fun.

I was told that they jam from cheap ammo , but have tried a few different types with no luck.

Will the extractor fix this?

Oh ya back to the subject , my last one had a folding stock with pistol grip which was around $120 i think. That dressed it up nice enough for me.

My 10/22 jams after using Winchester Wildcats.I installed a Butler Creek barrel and stock kit and a Volquartsen hammer kit,and the groups went from 1-1/2" at 50 yards to 1/2" with it's favorite load.
